Just wondering if i take the solenoid off of the starter and put it in the place of the upper solenoid will that tell me if that upper solenoid is bad? or will nothing work since the starter solenoid is missing?

Your trim solenoid is located on your outdrive. Look at the left and right side near the transom., You will see a round disk with arrows and a set screw.

You may be able to fix it by taking it apart but watch the springs and internals as they tend to fly away.

Your only option if you can't or do not want to try to repair it is to pull the drive and install new trim senders...

The solenoids are mounted on the pump assembly inside your engine bay. One each for trim up and and trim down. You can test them using the same process as testing your slave solenoid - by jumping across the two main posts (or check by using a voltmeter). If the pump motor runs with the jump test, then you probably have a bad solenoid or solenoids. However, they rarely both go at once - If neither up or down works then you may have a bad trim switch on your controls.

thats what i was thinking. Do you know how many volts should be in it when i hit the switch?
The trim down does work from the handle but only the trim up doesnt. The trailer button works as well.
If it is the solenoid is the one on the pump assembly the excat same as the solenoid used for the starter? The one i am looking at looks excatly like the maste or slave solenoid around the starter?

How do you know when these are bad?

It looks like you have the 3.0 w/ alpha1. If you look up the parts lists for those, it appears that, yes the solenoids for the trim are the same as the starter slave solenoid. All part # 96158. This solenoid was used in a lot of mercruiser applications.

You cannot get the outdrive up or down or both... First check the trim switch on the throttle if so equipped to make sure it is not the switch.... If the trailer button works, it is probably the sender...

Having a Bravo outdrive you have the senders I posted. I did not look to see you had an Alpha drive... Oops...

The trim position sendor and switch are the same on both alpha and bravos.

If you can lower the drive with the trim switch and raise it with the trailer switch but can't raise it with the trim switch there is a very good possiblity that the trim limit switch is bad.
Here is a link that explains how they work.

To really test to see if this is the issue you can find where the wires for the trim limit switch terminate inside the boat and place a jumper across them. If the trim switch works now you have a bad limit switch.

So i took a screw driver and ran it from post to post on the upper solenoid and had the wife hit the up trim and it worked from the handle, so i assume that solenoid is bad correct?

I have an Alpha 1 outdrive with a 3.0LX motor.
