The view of the frozen bay is beautiful from the Hospital! Yes....we are at Hamot Hospital with our son. He was riding his road racing bicycle and was struck by a internationally known delivery truck. He is in ICU but doing fine and off the ventilator. Bike helmet saved him but still has a compound fracture to both his tibia and fibia that was repaired yesterday and a broken wrist and index finger still waiting to set....very fortunate! He was thrown 15ft after impact. You may have seen it on the news in Erie. I don't want to bash the carrier or driver because it was an accident. Police stated he had the right of way and was wearing high viability riding gear....happened at 6pm. We have great medical insurance for him but different people ask if we called an attorney. Too soon to deal with that but it may be a real concern. Called his employer and he is on salary...they said not to worry. If he goes on short term disability, they will cover the difference. They really like him and are a great private company. Where do we go from here? Anyone here gone through this? Thanks, Mike.

I'm sorry to hear this. Its every parents nightmare. I wish him a speedy recovery.

I hope your son has a fast recovery.I wouldnt lawyer up unless there is permanent damage due to this accident, but it never hurts to have a consult with a barrister just to see where your son may stand.

Based on breaking things long ago you need physio and time to recover. It can take years before the final resolution. When you get to 65 an injury in your 20ies may cause probles.
Glad he is OK and has a goodcompanay to work for hard to find these days.

My prayers are with your son and family. Sounds like you have all your bases covered, so just give it time.

Thanks for the reply's everyone. Ben is more aware now and the first responder/EMT who splinted him came in for a visit. What a nice professional person....refreshing. He filled us in on some missing details. We thanked him for his service and time to come see Ben. You can tell he really cared. All is well so far, Mike.

Mike- we are really happy to hear things are going to work out for your son. We had a similar event with our 25 yr old son last August, as he was the victim of a hit skip leaving a party late at night. The person who ran over him of course never stopped, and thankfully - as he was laying there bleeding out, a nurse on her way home that night in a cab saw him laying in the street, and stopped to call for help and also stopped a severed artery from draining him. The entire group of people that were part of the event, from EMT's to Surgical teams, to the Nursing staff - everyone was tremendous and they did put him back together and he is fully functioning (He turns 26 in a couple weeks). The main thing we both have to be grateful for, is that almost all of the time these things happen, the families are not as blessed as we both were. Every time the news talk about someone being hit by a car, I swear it instantly grabs our attention no matter what we are up to. Prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery for your son are coming at you and your family....df

Thanks.......answered prayers every minute so far. He was moved out of ICU and in a Trauma Room now. Ordered solid foods and most IV's have been pulled. He did a breathing test and scored higher than healthy people....he's a Swimmer/Fly & Breast Stroke.

Thoughts and prayers going out for your son Mike ....

Mike, I know how you feel. My oldest is in heaven due to a drunk that hit her while she crossed the road with some older kids caring for her. Lady never even hit the brake. She slammed into a pickup truck and flipped it over before she came to a stop.

I'll pray for your son's speedy recovery. I'm so glad he is doing well. It could have been much worse.

Mike, although I haven't posted yet, I've been watching closely. Thoughts and prayers to your entire family. You know we're here if you need anything!

Mike, Sad to hear, our prayers for a speedy recovery. Glad it wasn't worse and also glad to hear your son is doing well and responding to the treatment. The EMT worker is a real stand up fellow. Glad to hear there are still decent people out there

Mike, if there's anything we can do to help out... Well wishes to all of your family

Thanks everyone! Ben is doing better but still confused a bit. Day to day memory is lacking but we hope it's the pain meds. We were told this could take a few weeks or months to clear. Sure his bell was rung but no damage can be seen on multiple cat scans. We were also told we had to access our car insurance first since his car is on our policy because of vehicles involved. That $5,000 coverage did not even cover 12 hours. He is also on our Health Care at 24 years of age. Ben won't lose any wages but we will taking time off work and traveling quite a bit. Can deal with that but keeping record of it. My wife/his mom has stayed with him and I'm back home doing what needs done here and his sister is back to college. She did not want to leave him but she needs to finish her senior year strong. So frustrating to be away from him with too many responsibilities at home/work/my company to run. We'll take it day to day and the prayers are working! Frustrating also that everyone is telling us to get him a lawyer up in Erie to deal with this. We're not "sue them" people but his rights may need protected. He is an single adult and parents don't have "all the say" these days. A friend of Ben's offered to take us to the Erie Yacht Club for dinner and an Ice Boat ride but we had to decline for now. He ask if I had a helmet with me! Offer is open ended and could be fun in a few weeks....I'm sure the ice will still be there on the bay, Mike.
