If I am looking at your drawing correctly, you have a direct line from the batteries to the dash. The only reason to use a relay is if the switch is not rated properly for the load of the lights as you stated.
It's not that way on the boat. I put it that way in the drawing to make it easier to understand. I pulled the 12v to run the switch from the fuse panel under the helm.
