Understanding your Boat's Electrical Capacity

Thanks for the info, it looks like I'm ok being close to 50% load.

Are you trying to start the whole portable generator war again?

"As for portable gensets, they have no place on board a boat. When cranked up below decks, they are veritable time bombs. The dangers here include spilled fuel, fire, carbon monoxide and electrocution hazard. If you want creature comforts on board your boat, permanently install a marine genset."

I discovered today that I couldn't run the BoatSafe 750w heater in the ER, plugged into the cockpit outlet, along with the ceramic heater in the cabin, plugged into the galley outlet. Tested the BoatSafe, which shut off after about 15 seconds. Uh,oh..Checked the GFCI plugs, which were both not lit. No reset possible either plug. Found the trip at the power panel. Reset and all is fine now, but at least I know not to leave the ceramic on in the cabin when I'm not there. I would recommend checking the total load you might be placing on - and depending on - your outlets for those really cold nights. At least now I know better.

This is from running on a 2000w honda genny. :smt001. Does it look ok ??

I can't see the pic through the fumes. Is that a reflection of a green face in that gauge? Why is the pic crooked? Nausea?

Like you, JK.

I had sort of an odd situation on my 390. The previous owner had replaced the original generator with a 10KW Kohler!

I ran the generator from before I left the dock untill I got back and tied back to shore power. I ran both A/Cs constantly and would turn all the 110 lights on as well as the stove and micro.
As mike said earlier...the weak link is the total withstand rating of the breaker on each bus of the panel. I would occasionally trip one but I could never slug that generator.

I had my 110/220 volt 5 hp Air Compressor in my truck one day. I had a 50 ft.10/3 cord with 20 amp cord caps. I pluged it into the duplex at the generator and ran the compressor for over an hour...no problem. That gave me the idea to leave the compressor on the boat one day when we were going to Peanut Island. I had my air powered DA polisher out on the bow polishing up a storm running the air comp off the generator!! I have 100' of hose for it so I could go all over the boat. People would stop and look in amazement at me out on the bow of that boat anchored in 5 ft of water running an air buffer. The generator got a fair workout that day with the A/C units running also.
