It would be nice to know how to handle a boat that well in those circumstances but how in the heck do you 'practice' for it.

Not a very bright move. He risked life, limb and property for no good reason. I would not want to be on the same ocean with him much less the same boat.

No panic of the crew coming in....no relief when the entry was over, the man on the bow was ready to release the anchor...they have done this many times before IMO.

I've already posted that this is skill, 100%. But this begs the question that only sailors might answer, "What were they doing out there anyway?"
