Very visible and functioning red and green, as well as countless other navigational markers in the area. The local rumor mill says no one on board was drinking, which is good to hear.

If this was nighttime running (assumption) they were both going way too fast.
We have s simmilar rock jetty at the entrance, and too often enough somebody runs a boat up......Running in the dark is really easy to get twisted around with orientation. Add speed and you no longer have enough time to react......this is when boats go crunch (or worse).
