Hey gang,

Ok so I have my Garmin 531S mounted to the windshield support pole. I really like the location, only downside is that support rod twists in the brackets, so when hitting waves etc the GPS unit swings around - rather annoyingly.

So I ordered a RAM suction mount, when we went out last Saturday I just could not find a good way to mount it with the suction mount, so I have left it mounted to the windshield support.

Ok so then I think, what can I do to maybe get that pole to be stationary? The wife suggested glue, nope don't want to do that.
But I am thinking perhaps just wrapping a couple layers of black electrical tape around where the pole enters the bracket, on the top and bottom, just might do the trick.
Anyone see any downside to giving that a go?

its permanent, but what about drilling a hole through the mount and support pole....then add some sort of pin, or nut and bolt to stop the spinning?

Or you could try cutting a small length of old bicycle innertube to use as a bushing between the post and the mount. It might have just enough grip to stop the movement.

Thanks for the tips guys, I may just try some black electrical tape tomorrow and see how it does - it won't take much I don't think to just keep it stationary and I like that I can remove it easily if needed. Hopefully with it being black it won't stand out and be an eye sore. If it doesn't at least now I have some other ideas.

Thanks,

How do you turn left?

It looks as if the gps is in a very unsafe spot if some evasive maneuvering is needed. For not only your safety but whoever maybe in your path when you cant turn left.

Let me know if you figure it out. I prefer the Suction cup on the right side of the wheel with the shortest RAM but it still bounces a bit.

It is not as bad as it appears at that angle in the pic.
When I have it positioned where I want, there is plenty of room between the unit and the steering wheel.
I typically keep my left hand in about the 10:00 o'clock position, so when I hit some chop it will swing over and bump against my hand. A slight nudge with my hand and it swings right back. That is the annoying part for me, and what I am trying to resolve by getting that support pole to be stationary.

Plus, the 531s is a decent size and is somewhat heavy, I like having it positioned a little higher but the weight of the unit - again when hitting chop - it settles back down lower, no matter how tight I tighten the ram mounts. If I could just solve it swinging around I would be a very happy camper. Keeping fingers crossed for the electrical tape.

Thanks,

Yes I was really hopefully in using the suction mount, just with the way the windshield is curved and the little room between it and the console top, I just could not come up with a location that I was comfortable with.
May end up using it yet after some more experimenting tomorrow.

Thanks,
