Hi all south shore boater

can anyone recommend a TV antenna that actually works where we are. I tried two with no results.

Thanks

I had a good signal from a small Shaspeare TV Antenea on my prior boat. I was able to pick up most of the major networks on a 19" flat panel tv. I think the Antenea model was the Seawatch 2020. I believe it was about 12"-13" in diameter. I believe they changed the model to the 3020. Freeport Marine has them for $175. Otherwise, you could always get a satellite dome.....

What type of tv do u have? If the tv does not have an internal digital converter or internal digital antenna it won't pick up any channels. So if u still have the tube tv that came with the boat your not going to get anything

I have a 14 flat screen. it just scans and never finds anything?
I tried two different antenns from the home depot with no luck.

My boat came with a shakesphere fresbi thing on the arch but i assumed it didnt work since the wire was cut.

What kind of antenna. Back about 5 years ago when they changed from anologe to digital is when they started putting digital reciever in the tvs internally. If you do not have a tv with an internal digital reciever you will never get it to work. There is a converter box that wires between the antenna and the tv you can use. Fairly cheap.

Just get sling box and stream your home TV to your TV on the boat. As long as you have an IP connection your golden; if you don't, then get an unlimited data plan for your phone for the summer and you can watch TV on your boat as if you were sitting in your couch at home. The best $300 I spent for the boat.

Ok now your going to have to explain this one. I have a sling box sitting downstairs and I have unlimited data on my cell that has a hot spot. Unfortunately I have the galaxy s6 which from my understanding cannot be hooked up to the tv via cable. So how do I get my sling box to my tv?

I'm not sure of the exact model, but the boat came with a seawatch antenna three tv' are new Smart tv' and with just the antenna it's like friggin HD at home. Get fantastic coverage so far for all the locals hemlock cove, Zachs bay. We watched the triple crown in the salon. I'll look at the model tomorrow .

I sure do not know as much as Scott about this as I am just getting started. I did install the bigger Glomex antenna with the amplifier and in some areas, it works great...in others, not too good. Also installed a 22" Skyworth TV same time last summer.

However, I have been studying this for a while. I cannot justify satellite on my boat right now financially. I purchased an Apple TV a week ago at Sam's for $72 and another HDMI cable for $8. I am going to try 2-different things.

1) Using my iPhone as a hot spot to put the Apple TV on the internet. It has a whole bunch of apps-Watch ESPN, ABC, NetFlix, and a million more. Plug the Apple TV into the TV via the HDMI cable and I bought a small inverter (300 watt) to power the Apple TV so I do not have to run the gen-TV is also 12v.
2) We have Dish Network at home and have the Dish Anywhere App on my iPhone. I can mirror my iPhone to the TV via the Apple TV.

The kicker to all of this is unlimited data as it will sure burn up some data either way. The Dish DVR has a built in slingbox. Bottom line, with the slingbox, you are transferring your TV over the web.

More to follow as testing is continued...

Not sure about the Galaxy S6 video/audio output options as I am an IOS Apple guy, but let's just say your correct and you cannot output via a wire.

Here is what I would do:

1. Turn the GS6 hotspot on
2. Buy a used Ipad on Amazon for $ 150-200 (w/ lightening connector)
3. Buy HDMI output connector (lightning to HDMI $35)
4. Download sling box app for iPad ($15)
5. Connect iPad to the hotspot and an HDMI cable from iPad to TV

You can also use the tablet to watch TV on deck when not streaming it to the larger TV below. if that interests you buy a 10" iPad as opposed to a mini which is 7". Another option of course would be to use Apple TV. It's a small box that would connect to your TV via HDMI and your wireless hot spot, but new is $100 and needs AC power. It does however offer a lot of cool features mentioned above and eliminates some messy wires per se.

The connector option I gave you above is 1/3 the cost. I thought about it, but then would have to run the generator when on the hook as opposed to just 12v to run TV, or use a converter option mentioned above, but then have yet more messy wires which drives me crazy.

I use sling box quite a bit when traveling for work; it's so worth the money and is a one time buy with no monthly fee.

If you want to test drive mine, I can take a ride out to Lindenhurst or wherever you are and set mine up for you before you go off and buy an iPad etc.

The key is solid internet connection. If you have that, you will wonder why you have not done this sooner. Unless you are traveling offshore, you do not need a $3000 satellite dome anymore to have great TV options onboard.

Cheers

I have everything listed above
I had a galaxy s3 which I could simply plug into my tv via a simple wrote. I loved it, no lag no apps just perfect mirror.then I upgraded to the s6. After I bought it I realized samsung took away the software needed to just plug it in. No video output anymore. So stupid. But u just gave me the idea to just turn my new phone on hot spot, connect my old phone to that and use that to power my tv, and I don't need to buy anything. Very nice y didn't I think of that lol

See you shouldn't have gave me your Apple TV so fast Johnathan. I also have sat TV and never activated it yet.
Im wondering and learning about slingbox now. Great info guys.

I do the sat tv thing with dish for a basic broadcast and supliment my premium channels movies, etc. with my optimum services through the tablet. I'm android, and use chromecast to stream, which works well for supported software (which is a lot ). HBO, Showtime, Netflix, Youtube, etc...all work great. Chromecast also has a full screen mirror which works ok, for non supported apps. I was able to put up the Ranger game on Sports Live Extra a few weeks back.

Joe I don't have any apple products so apple TV is is less to me I pad doesn't have the software to support apple tv and i t doesn't have the storage space to download 7.whatever. I just got chromec at just still trying to figure out how to mirror

I'm doing the Apple TV thing and Direct TV. The boat came with the sat antenna, but getting properly hooked up to Direct Tv has been unreal! 3 + hrs on customer support and its STILL not working. I have one box from them, another that I bought and its still not connecting properly. So I have to have a technician come in and mess with it. On the Apple TV side, my marina has new WiFi installed and it works great but you have to enter a password/voucher number and the Apple TV doesnt give you the option to do that. So I'm researching it now. It streams fine from my iPhone hotspot.

Can you use your phone as a hot spot for the Apple TV? If your phone is connected to WiFi, should not cost anything.

Cool, I just want to get the Apple TV and a password figured out to connect to the WiFi. The Direct TV is a killer

Connecting the Apple TV to wifi is just like an iPhone-with system name and PW. However, never seen a place to enter a voucher number.
