turn ipod to wifi.....

I guess my views on Apple aren't limited to the phone device. It is the whole apple experience. From adding memory to an iMac to integrating to a windows network, I've found them to be restrictive and somewhat anti-business. The MS, Linux, and even Android platforms seem more "open" to me from that perspective. But, you can probably make similar arguments from your side. At the end of the day, Apple gets lots of my dough. I wish they were more mainstream. Just look at the market share safari has on any big website...

Ps: I'm typing these responses on my iPad, which I think is more revolutionary than the iPod or iPhone. but it will be the android devices that blow the doors off at $99. At $499 this thing is still elitist.

yeah but just recently, you can now buy one android and get a second one free. I don't see Apple doing that with IPhone?

hmmm?

Guess you have to work it a bit when sales are slow?

no joke. AT&T's network is completely choked. The new iphone 4 is great... if you are on a wifi network. I think it's time to sell my apple stock. They hit the wall with their cool gadgets. their bottleneck is the network.
FYI:
AT&T (NYSE: T) has picked Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERICY) and Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) to build its new LTE (Long Term Evolution) high-speed wireless network. It is a significant win for the two companies, which are developing a similar network for Verizon, as it solidifies their hold on this particular piece of the wireless infrastructure market.

AT&T's LTE network is scheduled to start operating in 2011. LTE is another name for 4G. Verizon, which awarded its business to Ericsson and Alcatel last year, plans to roll out its LTE network this year.

So, AT&T is not that far behind. In fact roll out for both Verizon and AT&T LTE/4G may be about the same time here in the Seattle area...

The down side is all the air cards will be dead in the water with the new LTE approach, AND Verizon chosing a network topology that will be ruling out the iPhone for their users

My IPPhone is jailbroke and I can tether to any computer. SInce I am grandfathered, I have no limits. Verizon has always had limits... 5gb is their top for $59.99/month... so to recap...

Verizon max is 5 gb/month for $59.99, 250mb/month for $39.99, if added to your phone then its only $29.99 again for 5 gb per month... add to both phone and laptop $49.99 for 5 gb per month...
Over use: 5 GB overage rate is $0.05/MB and 250 MB overage rate is $0.10/MB

In the Canadian Broadband and Canadian Enhanced Services Rate and Coverage Areas, usage will be charged at a rate of $0.002 per KB or $2.05 per MB.

Not sure about you but I never liked checking to see how much internet I have used when I had Verizon...

Try watching a couple of movies each month and see what your end of month bill will be...

I wasn't coming at you personally but I hear this argument a lot and just don't get it. I'm a Mac and a PC guy and I don't know what people want to be open on the Apple side.

I love that the iPhone is "closed" and that I generally don't have to worry about where to get an app, whether it will work or not, etc. I think that gives Android more flexibility, but I also think it could lead to problems if they are not very careful...

Major carriers play catch up all the time, and different ones are better in various areas of the country. But I do not buy that Verizon is great and AT&T sucks. It isn't that black and white. That is just Verizon doing a better job at marketing than AT&T.

And I think AT&T put caps on because there are a very small percentage of users who are abusing the system.

BTW, I just checked, and I have downloaded less than 2GB via cellular in several months. I don't think the limits would bother me (even though they don't apply since I'm grandfathered in). Now, I'm not a heavy user, but I do normal email, send some pics, stream Pandora on occasion, play various games, etc. I've even done some slingbox to the phone. Setting the phone to automatically use WiFi (like at home) helps minimize the cellular data usage a lot.

Nothing personally inferred.

Don't get me wrong - I love many things about Apple, and own probably 15 of their devices. As for the "open" argument, how about we start with Flash?

...how about we start with Flash?

You are correct, Flash is a closed technology....in the sense that it's not an open standard like HTML 5. I think Flash on the iPhone is more a situation where Apple knows what works on their devices and what does not. If Flash crashes your iPhone you blame Apple, not Adobe. And, Flash actually crashed during the Android demo...embarrassing. It's just not suited for mobile devices.

On a serious note. . .I find I now "need" my own broadband at the shore. The local cable modem provider features ripoff pricing -> so I am looking at mobile broadband options.

Any recommendations?

Tethering an iPhone ($25+$20/month) sounds like one option. (I don't have an iPhone presently)

The Verizon MiFi sounds ($60/month) sounds like a better option.

I am a bit concerned about 3G coverage in the Jersey shore area for both Verizon and AT&T.

If you jailbreak the iPhone. . can you get a wifi hotspot? Or does the jailbreak simply provide tethering on an OS3 system? The MiFi router sounds really cool.

In Jersey, I think a mifi would be a better option. I jailbroke an old iphone and used it as a hotspot, it works but not great. when you jailbreak the iphone, it gets a little buggy and the battery gets sucked up quickly. Some of the verizon phones allows you to tether, so I would probably go that route if you already have verizon. If you need to hookup multiple devices, mifi would be my choice. whatever you choose, I would also get a cell booster if you go off shore any more than a mile. When I cruised offshore, I pretty much had no cell reception.

Mike;

Thanks for the feedback.

My current cell provider is AT&T . . . . so tethering a verizon blackberry is not that appealing to me. Despite my advocacy of "open platforms", I am not sure I would jailbreak an iphone.

The MiFi with a cell booster sounds like a good option. . .especially for a "house" installation. (this is not my full time residence, I only need wifi about 5 months a year at that location- the rest of the time, I would be inclined to use MiFi as a travel-with-me router).

Any recommendations on Cell Boosters?

OK. . .did research on cell boosters. I get that part of the deal now.
