188 mercruiser w/ alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive
This is on a 1978 220 overnighter there is evidence that its been changed. Like original trim switch was only up and down now it has one that's in all directions. There is a older extra set of hydrolic hoses going through the transom also I found this website

http://www.sterndrive.info/sterndriveparts/identify_my_outdrive.html

and mine is identical to the gen 2 but I'm being told its not. Here is a pic of what I have.

The drive is either MR, or Alpha1 . The hyd rams are a bit older more for a Series1 , MC-1 type. If the top of the drive is square and the gibbal housing is rounded the housing is MC-1 type and the drive was replaced.

OK did some more research and it is a alpha 1. Not the gen 2. Anyone know what kind of power they will take? I know off the line punching it will break them but just normal cruising what will hold up? I plan to build the 188 and put back. Not a lot more power but I have a block with a steel crank want to port intake and heads, maybe aftermarket intake. Its a big boat so I plan to take it slow and easy.

Also I'm thinking about through hull exhaust to reduce heat in the out drive and prolong its life. Any thoughts?

OK that's plenty to play with. Just didn't wanna push it if it was already close to max. The few HP I hope to gain won't matter.

What about the exhaust heat going through the drive. Is it a lot better to run it through the hull?

I know water goes through the manifolds and then through the out drive with the exhaust.
could I get an auxiliary pump and push fresh cold water through also to counteract it. Haven't read of anyone doing this but it would drop the temp quite a bit. Ide think. Don't have a ton of cash so trying to take any unneeded stress away anywhere I can to prevent failure.
