My stern drive trims down all of the way, but when you hit the trim up button, the motor just spins and the stern drive will not come up. The oil is full. Any ideas?
I checked the oil lever when it was up and it was full. I checked it now this it is down and it is full. It is currently all of the way down and the motor just spins when I try to trim up
Cylinder re-build may be in order. There's a little plastic slider inside that may be broken - causes the cylinder to sort-of "cam-lock" on itself. Not a hard job, but of course the cylinders need to come off for this.
Verify there are no leaks at either the pump or where the lines connect on the drive - but if you've been playing with it for a while and the fluid is still good, doubtful a leak is the problem.
Is there any physical obstruction on the drive itself?
If you want, crack the "up" line on the cylinders and hit the up switch. See if oil sprays out. Could also be an internal problem with the pump.
If you disconnect the lines at the cylinders, try lifting the drive by hand. It will go slowly since you have to displace the oil. If you can't, the problem is definitely the cylinders. If you can lift it, more than likely it's the pump.
