Mercruiser 5.0 MPI/Bravo III Drive
So I tried to find some info in old threads, but didn’t have any luck. Yesterday my trim would go down, but would not go up. When I hit the up button, no sound, nothing. But when I used the “trailer switch” the drive did go up. From a little research it sounds like it could be the trim sender and limit switch? Just wonder if anyone else has encountered this issue. I have a 5.0 mpi with bravo 3. Thanks for any input:)

If the drive will trim up with the trailer switch, but not with the trim switch it is the trim limit switch that is having a problem (the puck on the port side of the drive). They are prone to failure, the eventually get water in them and fail. Probably a new limit switch is in your future. Meanwhile you can just use the trailer button to trim the drive or disconnect the limit switch by disconnecting the wires back at the engine and connecting the two coming from the helm together - they should be bullet connectors. If you have smartcraft gauges the wiring is a little different for the sender, but I think the limit wiring is the same.

And so you know, using the trailer button to trim the drive is fine - it does it the same way as the trim buttons -- only thing to be aware of is with the trim limit switch in-operative it is possible to over trim the drive, so just pay attention to the gauge for now. Mine failed a few years ago and I used the trailer button for several months - replaced the limit/sender switches with the bellows, shift cable etc over the winter.

So I pulled the switches off yesterday, they both looked good, wires are in good condition, no corrosion or anything, so I just cleaned em up a bit, put em back together, and it goes up again, go figure. Will have them checked out by a mechanic when I pull her for the season though. Oh, and took her and filled up the tank while she was on land and saved $1.50/ gal over the marina gas:)

Good deal - usually it's the wires that start cracking, if you cleaned them up and they work, you could be good for awhile. The maintenance cycle on those is generally same time you replace the shift cable, bellows etc. My first set lasted 15yrs!
