Had the boat at anchor against some rough side-surf last summer. The force on the windlass bracket was side-ways and pulled a holding-screw right out of the hull.

I am unsure of how best to repair this. Thinking just putting a fresh screw in the same hole wont last. Does anyone have thoughts?

Remove the anchor roller and then drill out the holes and fill with resin epoxy. Then drill. Ew holes for the roller. I would also through bolt versus a screw. Finally when pulling anchor maneuver the boat so you are above the anchor so you are not loading weight on windlass or the roller.

There's no way a single screw would get pulled out without also affecting the rest. You're sure they're screws and not bolts? Regardless, do as mentioned above and remove it completely. Check the core (if there is one). If there is wood and it's in good condition, do the fill/re-drill thing for every hole. This will protect the core in the future. Thru-bolt everything with (ideally) a backer plate or at least large fender washers.

thanks guys - yes they are short screws. there is some stress related cracks on the hull too that you cant see in the picture.
another project! :(

Can you access the area needed for thru-bolts? You'll probably be doing it by "feel" only.

exactly. its a small access panel on the deck. I'll try and make it work. Replacing the windlass solenoid was hell and that's more accessible.. anyway, I'll report back. Thanks for the information!
