Tri color spoiler lights, LED (RGB) swim platform lights, LED cockpit lights and Blue Underwater Lights (Projects 13, 14,15 and 23)
Ok, here is what things look like now that these projects are done. The spoiler lights use the switch as a momentary to turn from white to blue to red to off. About $100 each from yacht lights. The blue is cool but bugs still think it's white lighting. The holes in the spoiler required widening slightly but almost a drop in. Two lights do a nice job lighting up most of the interior although the twilight pics don't do them justice.

The cockpit lights are also from yacht lights and were on sale for 30 apiece. They are actually brighter than the origs.

The Swim platform lights are RGB (up to a million colors) hooked into a wireless controller. Be aware that the chinese typically use positive not negative for ground which means not all controllers will work with the lights. Also, one manufacturer may put their lights in RGB order, the next GBR etc. No big deal except I used pod lights under the swim platform for Joe Florida (do a web search or check out my other posts) and a chinese source for ribbon lights and silicon/water resistant. They don't match so on the same controller they will blink or fade at the same time but in different colors. Anyway, the guys loved the look and my 380's platform is above the water enough to really show off the lighting.

The underwater lights were most of a flyer for me. I had been using abyss white lights (2) under my 2005 SR 300 but I took a chance and put in 3 blues. I also moved the lights closer to the surface (only a couple of inches below the water) for a couple of reasons. The first is that blue attenuates more quickly in the murky water we have in the lakes up here. The second, is that I wanted a more pronounced "rooster tail" effect. When I get more pics of these lights at night I will add them. I was a little concerned that the low cost of these lights might mean poor quality or low lumens but that didn't seen to be the case. I have these wired into my dash panel. The lights are from aqualeds. The instructions were minimal, ok, non existent. but the install was a breeze and I put in a 5 amp switchblade fuse to be safe. Here are the pics

I've not seen anyone operating a boat in our waters with these underwater lights switched on. However, if and when I do, I'll be sure to report the offender for displaying incorrect lights and creating a hazard to navigation.

Operating a vessel during conditions of reduced visibility (night) isn't play time for the children's toys.

LOL, I would suggest you look for this 62' pershing doing it. Maybe it will be easier for you to spot. As for me, I have no concern. I discussed the lights with the WP before I installed my first set of UW, whites 5 years ago and was told as long as the lights were not out of the water and not in a red/blue combo while operating but were instead used as "effect" or ambiance lighting they had no issues. But like I said, you should take your concerns to the couple of dozen or so UW light mfgs and point out their unsafe practices. Although if the local enforcement guys don't see it your way, and apparently in my neck of the woods they don't, I guess not much will happen. Good thing you didn't see some of the things we did for practice ops in the Navy. Then you really would have had something to call about. ;) Thanks for sharing your concerns though. It pays for everyone to make informed decisions when they customize a boat.

Thanks Todd, I guess I am just trying to have fun and personalize my boat without burning it down or creating too much havoc here or on the water . I joined this site to see what others did and share some of what I have done and some of my mistakes. To me it's all about making friends and learning as we go. Unfortunately that isn't true for everyone. Maybe they should have bought and island and not a boat ;)

Cheers

Lights look great! Don't worry Wolverine, I think it's a New Jersey thing

Or a responsible captain thing.

The least expensive LED light that they sell is $320.00. After seeing these prices I just don't understand why they are so expensive when they are not even made in the USA.
The 48 LED underwater lights that I have designed and sell are built in the USA and sell for way less, they are of good quality and have a one year warrantee.
Some things just never do make sense to me.

Fc3 go ahead and report me, if it will make you feel better.

Wolverine, nice job man. Yeah just be safe and have fun obviously don't endanger anyone including urself, but enjoy your purchase.

Doulas, these are your lights on here they look great!

I think it's a "cool mod". Just because it's not something YOU would do does that make it a bad thing. To each their own! As far as running with them on I would say no. Ya turn 'em on for a sec and dazzle your guests but that's it. If your sharing navigable waters you should display proper lighting as to not confuse anyone. This reminds me of the undercar lights. They are illegal in some places and get the right cop and he'll tell you so.

Well said Skuza!

I, too, have been puzzled by using uw lights underway for the "rooster-tail" effect.
I would think it is illegal...
But look at any manufacturer's website- including Ocean LED- and they have vids of them running at night and in fact promote and advertise the fact that they can be "on" while the boat is on plane.

It would be interesting to find any "official" position of the USCG on this; although the laws seem pretty cut and dry about not displaying any lighting other than nav when underway.

B4 I did these lights on my boat I asked the local authorities. Granted not the USCG.... I was told that as long as I have the proper nav lighting and the colored lights are 1. Not red lighting 2. Only aft facing, 3. Exterior lights below the white aft light then there should be no issues. It is recommended that in high traffic areas I turn the lights off as not to confuse other vessels. Basically my set up is viewed no different then a fishing vessel with underwater lighting attracting fish etc. And so far I have had no issues with local authorities and we have seen them many many times since my lights were installed

Thanks guys, that correlates with the answer I got from the"'authorities". The lights are not bright enough to "blind" anyone. It's an "effect" and if anything makes the boat a bit more visible. It is not a spotlight. I love that those that haven't even seen the look want to give their weighty opionion. But be that as it is everyone has an opinion. BTW the lights I used are about 150 a pop (UW) as I mentioned in the beginning vs stuff like ocean led. I am sure there is a difference but in turbid water having brighter lights is like using your high beams in a snowstorm or fog. More light in the immediate are from back scatter but not from penetration.

Hey FireRooster, just saw your pics. Very nice! I hadn't considered green. Being Michigan man my lights had to be blue of course. Although the platform lights are any color I want provided the controller has it programmed. I pretty much like the slow color fades to different colors on those right now when at anchor. I sent a note to the cg just to get the final say

The Gallery is great! I too had never thought about green nor have I ever seen it installed, but it certainly looks very nice on your boat! You obviously take some pride in your boat. Thanks for sharing!!:thumbsup:

Thanks for the compliments. Yes we love our boat and try to keep it nice. Lots of fun and memories on "Excessive Green".

Yeah curious to hear what the cg has to say as well

GUY'S,
Both of your set-ups look awesome. Firerooster, nice gallery thanks for sharing. After seeing these pics I am definitely adding them to my boat this off season! BUT, I will only flash them in morse code when underway saying something to the effect of "Be Warned- These are only effect lights and are a not an indication of where my vessel is heading". Now how does that go dot-dot-dash-dash-dash.......... Seriously, I would welcome feedback on what lights are installed, cost and the reason for choosing them or what to look for when purchasing. My friend spent 1k a piece which is too rich for my blood. Firerooster what lights does Doug sell? All things being equal would love to give the $$ to another CSR member! Todd

I'm not sure why they would say "only aft facing"...

The problem is that at night, from a distance, you cannot tell what part of a boat you're looking at. All you see is a colored light, period. I couldn't tell you if it was on the bow of the boat, the stern, or not on a boat at all. That's the entire reason we have red and green nav lights and an all-around.

If you were motoring away from me, with green LED u/w lights on- it would appear to me that you were actually heading towards me, and I'm looking at the starboard side of your vessel.
