What would be the best??
to do the tread mill 6 days a week for a 1/2 hour
or 3 days a week for an hour....

The important thing is to get your heartrate up to its optimum and keep it there for a good 30 minutes. How about 1 hr 5 days a week. You are retired right?

Cardio is good every day. If you work in some weights or other "training" you can alternate cardio days and weights days. If just treadmill try every day (written from my couch).

I agree with Ken. You need to be in a productive heart rate zone for a minimum 30 minutes. Do you have a heart rate monitor? If you add weights do light weights. The goal is strength not body building.

Good luck,

MM

We bought a Smooth Fitness 5-6 years ago. Wife is on it every night for 35-40 min. for a couple years there i had my 230lbs on it 2-3 times a week regularly too, so its seen some use. still going strong but there are several higher quality treadmills out there.

i try to do free weights 3x/week and cardio 2X but its a fight anymore to stay with it.

I bought a Landice L7 commercial treadmill 5 years ago. It's designed for heavy use. I run 6 to 9 miles six days per week and my wife does 3 to 5 four days as well. I do weights upper body first then run, and weights lower body then run on alternating days.

There are a lot of different activities you can do to try to stay fit. Use some variety in your workout regimen to keep you from getting too bored. In addition to walking on a treadmill body weight exercises like push ups, lunges, sit ups, and dips can help to keep your muscles in shape. Other activities like jumping rope (don't laugh it's a great workout), yoga, and some moderate strength training can be done just about anywhere. If regular exercise is not part of your daily routine it can be a life changing decision. I will also add that diet will also greatly affect how you feel about exercising. Once you make regular exercise part of your daily routine you will wonder how you lived without doing it!

Personally I wouldn't recommend a work out routine like that because you'll burn out fast (6 days/week). You're better off in my view to do something like 3-4 days per week for about an hour/day. You're less likely to burn out and it gives you muscles some rebuild time after you work out.

As another note, I think you will even find a treadmill flat out boring for 30 minutes even. I think you'd be better off on the treadmill for 10-15 minutes and then a stationary bike for 10-15 minutes. Then follow up with the last 30 minutes with some light weights. Again, just my view.

Thanks all for the tips...

My goal is to lose 14 more lbs, right now at 6' 1", i'm 214 lbs, I started dieting 222 lbs, i want to be at 200lbs... i was at 205lbs at the beginning of the boating season but with all the BBQ's and beer and great times i packed it on  my waist pants size went from 36' to 38-40 :wow:

I already lost 8 pounds since the 3 weeks of walking on the threadmill, i can't run because i had a knee replacement 2 yrs ago and i feel uncomfortable running

Im not new to weight training and i will again start that again in week or two, right now i do 40 pushups at home and light weight curls 25 lbs every day, and 1/2 hour of 3.2 miles per hour of thread mill 6 times a week

i think the 1/2 hour treadmill every other day, and weight training every other day is the way ill go:thumbsup:

YES! i'm retired at 73

Whatever you do,dont buy a bike and skin tight apparel. Then, think your a car and hog the road going half the speed limit. :smt021

I use our treadmill 24/7 and have done it that way almost since it was new. Makes a great hanger for clothes, a place to put boxes of stuff that need to go to the garage, etc. I love our treadmill.

Bill,
I am 36 and I go through the same process every winter. I usually spend the snowy months spending time getting rid of all the fun that I had during the summer. It's nice to know that I am not alone! Congrats on your weight loss and here's to a flatter stomach next summer!

Bill,
It is not necessary to run to increase the cardiovascular demand of your work out. Just increase the incline on your treadmill and you will increase the METS of your workout. As a physical therapist this is often the advice given to post surgical patients. Good luck with your conditioning!
