Have any of you had rust coming out of this joint back on the transom corner of the boat?

There is rust oozing out of that silver thing-a-ma-bob and I don't really know what is under it...

The thing-a-ma-bob is located near the waterline... here's another shot down the side...

Anyone else seen this? What did you do?

If I had to guess, I'd say that that Thing-a-ma-bob is nothing more than a decorative 'end' to your lower rub rail. Remove the two screws and have a look. You'll probably just see some rust on the inside of the Thing-a-ma-bob....maybe a lesser grade of SS then it could/should be. The outside gets cleaned and waxed....the inside....not so much.

OR.....you're just trying to show off the shinney new detail job you had done!!!!!

Yep, take it off and scrub it with a toothbrush and some Seapower. More than likely it's just pooling more water that anything else.

Well... it was just polished... but the damn rust looked REALLY bad before it was cleaned up and I don't want it to come back.

I wasn't sure how this thing is held on... Probably some intergalactic goop under it...

What I think it is... the clamb-shell fits too tight over the railing, not allowing water to run off. I'd try two small & thin nylon or plastic washers undes the clamb-shell end.

also, just re-looked at your pic. on the port end of the clamb-shell it looks right up against that rub rail screw.
Creating a different angle for water to run?

Just me 2 cents worth.

I agree with the cheap hardware prognosis. Pull it off, clean it up and put back with some quality fasteners.

BTW: rubrail and striping looks pretty banged up! has that boat been used? ...Ron

SR uses 316 stainless steel fittings and fastners. Your problem is that there is no bedding under the trim piece capping the end of the rub rail. It is holding a little water until it evaporates and stainless isn't really "stainless", it will eventually rust.

The fix is to remove the end trim and bed the thnig like it should be. I would mask off the area before removing the end piece then fit back in exactly the same position, plus the masking will make it easier avoid making a mess with the silicone.

X2

I'd also run a thin bead of silicone around the top and along the joint to the rubrail to prevent water from getting inside.

I've used one of the plastic syringes used for injecting West System, filled with silicone for a very neat and tiny bead (under 1/8") all around my rubrail. You can barely see it.

That's a good tip, Tob. Can you get those separately?

Another one is to use a plastic sandwich bag like a Baker's icing bag. Just cut the corner off to make the appropriate sized hole. The syringe seems like it would be a little easier to use.

Don't forget.... Stainless = Stains less
