Good day ladies and gents,

We just finished a 5 week holiday in our 2003 340 Sundancer. Over 90 hrs of engine time. A Canadian holiday, started at home port in Ottawa, down the Rideau Canal to Kingston Ont, around Prince Edward County, through the Murray Canal to Trenton, a quarter up the Trent-Severn back to Trenton, Belleville, Bay of Quinte to Kingston back up the Rideau Canal and home.

I thought I'd start with a little trip story before I addressed my concern. With all that boat time you have to assume that it is not without its little trials and tribulations. While we were in the Bay of Quinte we decided to make up some time and go on step. To my surprise at the 2800 rpm mark my port engine went into reduced engine power mode and engine went into gardian. Had to finish trip at about 1600 - 1700 rpms. Not a problem because we normally have to go slow in the canals anyway. Finally got to a marina where they did a diagnostic and found out that we had a faulty sensor. Had it replaced and all is well.

Now all this to come to the real dilemma. While they were fixing the sensor they noticed a little transmission oil leak on the starboard engine. I am not a mechanic but they mentioned something about a possible leak in the shaft coupling seals, I think. They said to fix this problem it would require to take out the engine and replace the seals at an approx cost of 2k however if it was seals in the transmission that would have to send it out for repair at approx cost of 5k.

Now I ask myself that I can buy a lot of transmission oil to top up what is leaking for 2 to 5k.

My question is has anyone had this problem before or any other oil leak and just accepted the fact and just kept a spare can or two to top up when required ?:smt100
