My boat is 44', plus a 3' swim platform, and about a foot of dinghy overhang, making me 48' overall.

South Haven municiple, MI only has a 45' slip available for a weekend I'm looking at in July. How ill advised is it to hang into the fairway a bit? (I think I already know the answer, but need to hear it outloud...)

What other options are in South Haven for dockage on a weekend?

Ask the marina, they might surprise you.

Honestly, a great idea. So used to doing things on-line, when picking up the phone is often forgot about.

I know ours will allow you to hang over a little bit, but they will charge you for the extra few feet.

We allow 6’ overhang at our marina.

Agree. Marina is deciding where they are going to put you. They know what the situation at the slip is.

Your plan to call is going to get you your answer. Depends on marina. My marina in Florida allows 0 hangover past the outer most slip piling. In Michigan, my marina allows 10% over slip size. Other marinas we cruise to don’t care how far you stick out.

My marina rents by the slip size and no charge for hanging out into the fairway. We have some boats sticking far out. Everyone accepts it.

Normally I would say get a slip that matches your overall length, when traveling I see so many people who reserve by their boat length and hang out 4-5’ in the fairway making the fairways smaller than they already are and subject to damage for everyone....there are some exceptions depending on the marina layout but normally not a good idea in my opinion.

Thanks everyone. I called, and they said no. There is a marina on the other side of the river (north side), called them, got a message to check slips on line, but, can't find any good info on line. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks again, this site is always a great resource!

Another thing about South Haven. The dockmaster carries a steel tape measure and determines the actual length of your boat. They apply the transient rate to the what the tape says. I believe the slips across the river are a part of the city marina. They are nice, but a bit of a hike to town.

Every marina seems to be a little different. I stopped at a place in MD for a couple of nights. Told them I needed a 50ft slip as my boat is actually 51'4". They put me in a 40 ft slip and said "it's ok, don't worry about it". At least it was good practice docking in a tight spot. lol

I have stayed in South Haven several times in the 45’ slips and they have not said anything to me. I am 45’ + 4’ extra for platform & dinghy.
