need some advice about mounting a fish finder transducer on the transom of my 96 175 br this is my first boat however I have ben around them most of my life. lived in san diego crewed on charter boats. I am a retired automotive and heavy truck mechanic. the issue I have is my boat has a swim step above the outdrive and I don't want to run the ducer cable over it. if I run the cable just below the step near the top of the outdrive will I have a problem with back wash when I come off plane? the hole is 1" for the cable .any suggestions would be appreciated thanks

Drill it out larger, fill with epoxy, redrill the right size and install with a clamshell vent and a good sealant. Best if you're above the waterline. Very common practice on thousands of boats that are setup like yours. Although most will not take the extra step to do the epoxy. It may come with it's own clamshell.

Mine is several years newer but similar type of install, just the transom has a smaller setback around the drive. I drilled as high as possible above the drive / below the platform (which is above the waterline). Filled with special marine sealant and no issues.

I have a 1997 175. Look closely and you can see how mine is mounted.

You got it. Plenty of "google" advice out there (some good... Some not so much) - but let me know if you have any ?.

Here is another pic of how mine is installed. The blue tape was temporary until the sealant dried (I used it to keep the wire attached to the hull). The top hole where the wire comes through is all the way up, just below the bottom of the swim platform. Fill that sucker with marine sealant after you drill. Once it dries you will be fine and don't have to worry about water getting in.

Hi, If no bulsa in hull you can also mount in bilge under motor with sika flex no problem at all and no drilling of transom. Cheers Crofty.

I think the general consensus is you can drill just about anywhere (above or below water line) as long as you use the right marine sealant.
