Lots of good threads on this (that I have read on various forums here and other boating and RV sites) and move strong views than politics and religion :smt021 ...and a moving target that every year changes.

I have been running Goodyear Marathons ST225/75R15-D for 3 years and approx. 25K miles (on dual axle Heritage trailer). No issues until late last year when I had my first blow out (full tire separation due to heat) - no cracking on sidewalls and tie inflation always monitored. Knowing 3-4 years is about max on a trailer tire, I am planning to replace all 4 with new tires in the coming weeks and really wanted to upgrade to an E rated tire … so considering a few options:
  • Simply replace with Goodyear Marathons ST225/75R15-D (no E rating on 15’s)
  • Some have recommended going to Hercules (made by Cooper?) - ST225/75R15-E
  • Towmaster ST225/75R15-E
  • Maxxi - ST225/75R15-E
A few questions:
  1. Any new “2012” opinions on tire manufacturers?
  2. Any concerns/issues with putting a E rated (80psi) tire and proper stems on my current wheels I should consider?
  3. Not tire related – any preferences/recommendations on good bearing grease?
Thanks for all opinions …

I like the goodyears, and my choice for bearing grease is the Lubrimatic (green color), it is made for boat trailer bearings. I always stock up while at H-Depot as they have the grease in my local store.

I would go with the maxxis tires. I have them and they are great. I have had problems with the Goodyear since they are now made in china

For grease I would recommend Chevron Delo Synthetic SF if you are doing any serious driving. A couple of my large fleet clients have been using this for some time with great results.

The two biggest issues I've found with trailer tires is improper inflation (over / under) and dry rot. I bought the Marathons last time around but honestly I feel if they are properly checked & cared for one brand is not much better than the other.

Thanks all - after more research looks like my 15 wheels (rims) may not handle the 80lb pressure of E rated tires ... so the old GYM lasted 3 years with no issues and great ride and had no dry rot ... so think I will just replace with new GYM and go another 3 years ...
