1st, let me say this isn't really about my frugal nature. It is more of a convenience thing. I currently do not have a spare tire on my trailer mostly because we really don’t tow our boat anywhere. Our marina does all the launching and it’s about 500 yards from the dry storage to the launch ramp. However, this year we have a Lake Powell trip planned where I will be towing my boat for about 1,200 miles round trip and having a spare seems like a good idea.

Now to my question, I have a spare rim off my 1968 Mustang that is in very good shape. It is the same diameter as the trailer rims (14”) and has the same bolt pattern. Any reason I can’t mount a trailer tire to this rim and use it as a spare? The trailer tires are ST205/75D14. Thanks for the feedback.

unsure about the if the tire will mount but I had a trailer tire blowout ( one year old tire ) this past Friday on a major highway and I was really glad I had a good spare and a good jack. whatever you do don't skimp on it, it's not worth it.

If you have BoatUS get the Trailering Option it will be worth it.

The problem with the spare from the Mustang is that it won't have the sidewall strength to handle the load it will be subjected too. I don't know how far Lake Powell is from where you live, but it's a small price to pay to spend less time on the side of the road and more time AT the lake!

I think the Mustang Rim should work just fine.Just throw the same tire as the ones on your trailer on there. Like Quint suggested, make sure you have the jack and equipment to change it if needed.

I'll agree with both of those statements - the Mustang wheel would likely work but a designated steel trailer wheel is pretty cheap. One thing to check on the Mustang wheel is the width - I know that ST205 Goodyear Marathons, for example should not be mounted on wheels wider than 6.5". You can check the tire mfg web site for min/max width specs.

If you have a Northern Hydralic in your area you can pick up a wheel and a already mounted tire for less than having a tire mounted on that Mustang rim. They have a big selection of 14 inch tires and rims with various wt ratings.

Being economical is fine but this is not the place to be frugal with a 1200 mile tow. Sitting on the side of the road with a flat will not be popular with the family.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess it's not such a great idea afterall. I see that Overtons has the rim/tire comb I need. I think I'll go that route.
