I am about to buy one. Any pro's/con's on this particular device? does anyone has this model? Any feedback would be much appreciated

I would double check with them to see if it will be able to pick up the HD when Direct TV switches to the new Satellite (If you are going to use Direct TV), as when I spoke with Sea King, the dish that now picks up HD, will NOT be able to once Direct TV switches which is going to be soon.

Will this changeover only affect HD? They will still recieve the normal non HD signal, right? SB

It's an older model, didn't even know they made it anymore. The thing is huge- 33" in diameter and weighs 32 lbs. Designed for hardtops.

You're not really going to try to put that thing on a 260 are you?

C3 was really designed for use on RV's. It is significantly cheaper than the M3, but the components inside show it. None of the gyro sats (KVH, Sea Tel, Sea King, etc.) will be able to track the Ka band satellites. Once DirecTV changes all of their HD programming to their new Ka satellite(s), no one will get HD with a gyro stabilized satellite.

The C3 will work, but it looks like it goes on an RV.

Just my opinion, within a few years companies like Sirius will be broadcasting a variety of channels. This will allow you to have a small antenna, about the size of your GPS antenna.

They are already offering this with a limited number of children’s channels for some Chrysler vehicles in 2008. In some countries like Eastern Europe where 3 satellites were available, they already have TV packages. It’s coming.

Then any size boat, even w/out a arch can have it.

You should define what you mean by "it"... Because "it" is not going to be a wide selection of channels with HD resolution (audio and video) or even regular ole' 480i. I know I want 720p broadcasts with a minimum of 5.1 surround sound. With everything going to Ka band, one needs a BIG antenna and a capable LNB which is the problem right now for TracVision stuff. It doesn't exist and so buying one now thinking it'll work with a software upgrade is a big mistake. Even non-HD channels are moving to Ka band which means the current line of antennas will be thrown in the garbage in a few years.

I don't get it.
Don't know about you guys, but the things I enjoy about boating have NOTHING to do with a blasted TV! Who cares about HD, or 720p or whatever???
Just get me out on the water!

Rayray,
I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but, take a look http://www.boattest.com/VLibrary/vPlay.aspx?ID=347

This link has all 4 video clips on the subject http://www.boattest.com/vlibrary/vlist.aspx?s=KVH&BtnSearch=Video+Search#

Slamjammer,
You're right and I feel the same way most of the time. However, I think this more applies to folks that stay on boats just for weekends or long weekends. For those who spend more time it's a little different. Even when we went for 3-4 days in the last season we felt totally disocnnected from the world. In the way it was nice, but at least I feel I don't mind just a little of news or take a pick at favorite show, nothing too long though. But, when we're talking smaller kids, this doesn't hirt if you pop in a move for them so you and admiral can have some break. We have one 3 year old "high maintenance" little guy and even with the help of my 10 year old girl we don't mind to have 1hr break :))

Alex.

Does that mean the 19" flat screen I just install over the frig wouldn't work anymore?

Will the glomax antenna be obsolete? The admiral does care about HD, but she's not going to be happy with no SD TV.

I'm always reluctant to post responses on some of the stuff used on bigger boats and longer cruises because of these kinds of statements...

Believe it or not, sitting down in the evening and watching a movie with the wife, kids, and dogs is enjoyable... really... and watching the weather/news in the morning with a cup of coffee isn't all too bad either... and having the football game on while trolling 40 miles offshore with a bunch of guys.. priceless

Gary ull enjoy this. I grew up on boats. My dads first boat had an ice chest for a frig and an alchol stove. ( was a 32 WOOD LUHRS ) The head discharged directly over board. 1970's..... As the boats got newer he kinda got used to the bigger boat comforts. He became a different man. Its funny how it evolves...

Im sure today he'd get a good laugh out of cockpit a/c and sat TV,,,,,

Yeah... Your dad must have known mine... 1960's vintage wood Owens cabin cruiser with the alcohol stove and stinky head. Safety gear (pre-VHF) was some sort of 2-way AM radio.

Just because I have TV's and such on the boat doesn't mean I don't like or know how to boat properly.

The TV will be fine... the glomax will be fine...

The problem has nothing really to do with high-def vs. standard def but the fact that DirecTV is moving their technology to Ka band satellites instead of Ku band. Think of it as starting to broadcast on FM instead of AM (figuratively and not technically). The newer channels they are adding are high-def so it's just by chance they are putting those on the newer satellites that are Ka band. The original standard def stuff and a few limited high-def channels are currently on Ku band and will eventually be put on Ka band even though some will not be high-def.

So the problem is going to be the sat dishes that will all need to be replaced (which they are currently doing on terrestrial installs) and that fancy $5K dish on the hardtop is going in the trash.

Actually, I got the whole boat free when I bought some extremely overpriced throw pillows. But the boats interior matches those throw pillows perfectly!

Those must be some pillows.

I bought these really overpriced absorbent rags for over $200 boat dollars and they gave me 500 gallons of diesel!
