Hey guys, just to be on the safe side, can I tow the 240 sundancer with my 05 F150 5.4L Triton V8? Only problem is it's a 2WD. :smt021

What is your F150 rated for? IMHO I think you may be pushing the limits of it.

8500 lbs.

This is a link to Trailer Boats dot com's towing guide. Click on the PDF and look it over. I don't think your 150 is going to be a big enough truck to haul around a 240DA. But I have seen a 230DA pulled by a Ford Explorer...

Be careful out there.... :smt024

well I am getting nervous...everyone has told me I can pull it with ease.

I would step up to a 3/4 ton. Your goal should be to tow with a margin of safety of 20 percent There are build differences in the 150 and a 250 truck that help you control the load.

Dry wt is 5600 plus fuel 750 plus water 160 plus trailer 1500 this is
8010 lbs. Now add stuff, that is a scientific term to describe everything you must have to go boating plus people in the truck and you are easily over wt.

Good luck

wouldnt trailer brakes help stopping signficantly? I used to pull my 7 x 12 enclosed trailer with 3 bikes plus gears and had no problems stopping with the brakes. I know there is a much more significant weight difference we are talking about.

If you are involved in an accident, you will have to explain to your insurance company why you were knowingly over your GCWR. They might toss a coin to determine if they cover or keep you! I'd ask them!

I'd prefer a bigger truck, and I'm not sure what a 240 weighs, but I think you are within reason with the proper trailer/tongue weight, and good working brakes.

The wts in my above post are from the SR site. I estimated gas etc and no people or stuff. This is not a good idea. Trailer brakes will help but the F 150 will be working too hard. Towing with this setup will be a white knuckle experience that will be anxiety filled. Your insurance company is not going to like this setup if you are in a wreck.

Your trailer should come with dual surge brakes. Do you know the make of your trailer yet? Magic Tilt seems to be a popular brand of Marine Max at the moment. It should have brakes on both axles as per new federial requirement on any trailer with a capacity over 5000 lbs.

Nothing beats brute force and dead weight. Both forces rule when it comes to moving vehicles.

Yes, I got magic tilt trailer with dual brakes. I am not going to be towing long haul as the marina is only 15 minutes away.

If your careful, you may never have a issue for travel that short of a distance. Just be self aware enough to realize you can't stop that trailer on a dime and it can easily push you into a another car or into a intersection if you fail to plan appropriately.

Best of luck.

 I'll take that into consideration, I've been towing my enclosed trailer while I was in race season with 3 bikes plus gear for 2 seasons, I know it's less weight than the boat but I've always been cautious. I think I will go ahead and install the tranny cooler to be on the safe side as well.

Bethca move up next year

I towed our SD for a few months ( very short trips ) with an explorer that was close to the wt limit.

Not any more........
