I think I might have screwed up my renaming ceremony last weekend. I think i didn't spend enough on the champagne. Yesterday I was taking my boat out to the local relaxation area about 4 miles from our marina. We jumped up on plane just like normal and were about 2 miles out when I started to lose power. We were cruising at 30mph and then dropped to 27mph. I pushed the throttle all the way forward and nothing more happened. I immediately turned back toward the marina and was wondering if the wind had picked up that much but it had not. I put the throttle in neutral and popped the hatch to look at the motor. It felt like it had a small miss. Shut the hatch and continued further toward the marina. I stopped and opened the hatch again and still everything seemed ok. I thoght maybe I got something wrapped around the prop so I shut off the engine(stupid I know know) and tried to start it up. It cranked hard but finally started. We continued toward the marina. The whole time the temp never went above 172 were it always is and the oil pressure stayed the same we just couldn't get the boat above 27mph and about 3300rpm. I slowed down again and noticed some oil on the top side of the motor then shortley the oil pressure dropped and I shut everything down. We were about 1/4 mile from the marina and thanks to the dockhands they came out with a pontoon and pulled us back to our slip. We had a mobile marine come buy 2 hours later to tell us the motot was shot, camshaft or dropped valves. The motor started for him but was not running on the back 2 cylinders. I checked the dist. cap while I was waiting for him and it was definitely corroded. He said the oil was spraying out of the dipstick because of the excess pressure from a bad piston? There was no oil on the bottom of the pan but seemed to be on top on the starboard ,forward of the engine.

Sorry for being long winded. I"m just trying to figure out the problem. 290 hours on the motor/boat. Is it possible for about 2 quarts of oil to spray out of the dipstick tube? The oil was dark but not milky. Is there some oil line that comes out neer the alternator? The dealer we just purchased it from in February is supposedely going to stand behind it. I just don't want to be without it for the summer. I know how backed up the mechanics get. I know I should post this in engines but if I dont get a reply then I will retype the novel. Any ideas what it could be??

dam man that sucks.. my first boat lost compression in the middle of tampa bay... i almost cried cause i didnt have sea tow.. luckly after drifting for an hour a nice fishing boat towed me to the ramp at no charge...

now my new boat has sea tow, a vhf, and a cell phone.. lol..

hope it all works out man..

That does not sound good at all, sorry to here about that. It is possible for oil to blow out of the dipstick tube if there is a hole in a piston as compression is going into the crankcase instead of staying the cylinder and going out the exhaust. Now is the mobile mech just trying to get you to buy an engine or did it really blow out two quarts of oil. You say the dealer is going to stand behind it so wait and see what they say.

I agree with Midway - you have to be getting compression pressure into the crankcase to push the dipstick out. That means something that's supposed to hold the compression in the combustion chamber (piston, rings, valve, etc.) isn't doing its job.

Unfortunately it sounds like engine surgery to me. Good thing your dealer is going to stand behind it. Best of luck to you, and let us all know how you make out.

Cheers,

Bill

I think the problem was definately the Champaign.

And did you have the requisite king's crab legs?

Good luck with the dealer. Hopefully they don't put you at the end of a very long line.

Crankcase pressure...plugged PCV valve or the hose running to or from it...will push oil out of the dipstick. A dropped valve makes a lot of noise and smoke...see what your dealer finds, then drink lots of champaigne

Scott, sorry to here about that. I got to tell you, every time I read a story like this, I wonder, what, and when is it going to happen to me? My brother just got his boat back yesterday (1 month laid up) from a fire that started in the shower sump. What a mess that was. It could have been worse, though. Only 4K in damage. :smt009
Good luck with your repair. Keep us posted.

Well the dealer sent out 2 service guys to the marina today. Compression check showed #4 and #6 cylinders dead. They said without completely tearing it apart that they could conclude 1 of 2 ideas. !st would be a blown head gasket between the 2 cylinders and also forcing oil out the side of the motor. Not too likely. Second would be to bad pistons with the probable cause of the engine overheating at some time past. I could believe this after noticing an extra impeller on the boat. I would guess the last owner had overheated once and didn't want to chance it again. They quoted me $6300 for new motor-5.7 260hp-new water pump just in case and all labor included in the price. Her is the kicker. If they can get the motor it will be back in the slip by next weekend-1 1/2 weeks including leaving it in the slip so my wife and I can enjoy the 4th on it. The dealer said he will not cover 100 percent and I don't expect him to(sort of I do). I am going to tell them to do it. Are there any other item I should take care of while the motor is out? 7 years old and 290 hours on it. Thanks in advance. Good news is that our slip is 30ft and I have permission to look this winter. You just never know.

Definately should have had the crab legs.

With the new motor. . ask what will be new and what is not.

I would not be concerned about an impeller in the boat: Aren't they wear items? Replace every two years?
