Since it is starting to get warm and I'm hearing people talk about splash dates wanted to see what is happen on the river. I can't wait to make the 1st of many trips to the river this year. Looks like TVA has started raising the local lake here in the mtns. Got any TN river people boating yet?

tennessee river

Chuck1,

Nice photo of entrance to Hiwassee River from Tennessee River. My wife and I took our 290 out last weekend for second time from Pine Harbor Marina on Soddy Creek. I suggested that we head up to Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge to see if there any birds out. Wife was piloting and I asked her to slow it down as we approached the Hiwassee/Tennessee river juncture due to low water. We then stayed in channel up to where the channel splits to allow you to go around the island. Checked depth finder and we had over 15 feet registered prior to approach to buoy marking channel around the island. She kept boat in channel as she made turn and the depth finder registered 5 feet!!! She cut power and depth finder registered 3 feet!!! All of this in a matter of approximately 30 seconds. I jump over and try to raise trim on outdrive when we grounded. Luckily we were able to back out and get the boat ungrounded. After we did so, two bass boats passed through exactly where we were at about 30 mph with no hesitation and no problem. When we got back to out dock, we discovered that we were not the only boat from our dock that had grounded on Hiwassee that day. I know that TVA has lowered lake levels but we were in the center of the marked channel!!! The water and weather were great last weekend but I won't be venturing out of the Tennessee River channel for a few more weeks.

Keith290,
Thanks on the photo comment. Yes the channel is always interesting around the Island. Not sure, but I don't think it has been dredged in a while. Seems like there was some shoaling in it last time I went through last year. Pine Harbor (Home of Steves Place, some of the best ribs on the river) Stop in there when ever we are doing that section.

SR360AFT,
How was the river up your way. Has TVA raised the river up your way yet.

We're still at winter pool (~5 ' on Ft Loudon). We are looking foward to next weekend though, first projected 80 degree days of the season :smt038

With that Kind of weather I'm sure there will be a bunch out. We talked about doing a road trip to Nickajack (Hales Bar up to Downtown Chat.) soon.

TN River

The wife and I ate at Steve's a couple of weeks ago for the first time and really enjoyed it. We went pretty far up Soddy Creek until the depth got to me and we turned around. Thanks for the info on the depth on the Hiawassi, I was think about heading that way this weekend, weather permitting. I'll spread the word at the dock as well.

Have not made it to the TN river yet, but I'm ready for TN River Run  Hope you have a great trip this weekend. Doing the Cooper River down to Charleston with some of the guys on the board this coming weekend. Hope your weather is good and you get to make the trip.
