I am really getting myself annoyed with the sound of my generator exhaust. It's a Westerbeke 8.0 diesel and I just replaced the impeller and it appears to be pumping well as the video below shows.

Is there anything else I can do to quiet down the exhaust note on this? I would prefer to not have to buy a second muffler but I will if that is what will work.

I guess I'm going to have to add this one to my list of FAQ's..............

Once again...you have 2 choices: You can add or replace the muffler with something of a different design. I've got the same generator and I think the noise stems from the valves and fuel knock instead of the exhaust, so I think the muffler idea isn't going to bear much fruit. The second choice is to attack the mechanical noise by having the head torqued and the valves set to spec, have the injectors cleaned and pop tested and finally, buy a sound shield for the generator.

Frank, I'm good with the engine noise. It's the actual exhaust note that drives me batty. I would swear that it's louder than by 3116's.

We put a generator exhaust water separator on Beachcomber when we bought her. The exhaust now sounds like a soft hum. The water that is gurgling in your video is shot out below the boat through its own thru-hull so there's no gurgle at all.

If you have ever had an impeller fail and did not get all the pieces it could be limiting the flow. When the water surges like that it and it is that noisy that is the first thing to be suspicious of…..You can find a plugged heat exchanger or oil cooler 90 degree elbow by following the line out of the impeller body. I have seen it do that numerous times. You will need some dental picks or little needle nose to grab the rubber pieces.

A guy at my marina has a 330 with the same generator/muffler as mine, but his exhaust is MUCH louder. The only difference between our generator setups is the location of the generator - mine is towards the cabin bulkhead, which means there is a long hose with several bends between the muffler and the outlet. His is on the starboard side, with a fairly short run of hose between the muffler and outlet. He's considering doing a longer hose run off his muffler to dampen the noise.

In case anyone doubts this, I had my valves done over the winter, and it made a big difference. My wife noticed it right away. It don't get more official than that.

Have him contact Centek first. The longer run may cause insurmountable backpressure. The addition of a second muffler may be an easier route. They exist for problems like the one you describ.

I'll let him know. But as long as his run is no longer/more complex than mine, it's hard to see how the backpressure would be an issue - we have the same generator.
