THT and Sea Ray

If you don't have a Contender with trip Verado's, you have a junk boat on the THT....:smt043

Seems fitting that they start another Sea Ray bashing thread on an incident where a guy lost his life....

You gotta agree with alot of what they are saying. If you don't, I think you might be overlooking it. Look how many newby question get fielded here, and how many times you have to ask the OP to post more information so that you can help them. There is ALOT of inexperience in Sea Ray customers for reasons pointed out in the THT threads. My opinion. Heck on LKN there is always a Sea Ray heading somewhere on the lake with way to many people aboard, and going way to fast for conditions or blowing a wake zone. Just saying.

From my experience, the only ones who bash Sea Rays have never owned one. They rant about:
-the high initial cost
-the rapid depreciation
-they hold their value well (yeah, I know this is a contradiction to the one above)
-"I don't like that design"
-etc., etc., etc.

What it boils down to is (a) they can't afford one, and (b) they're jealous of people who own one.

I looked at a LOT of boats from a LOT of manufacturers before I bought my first 330 Sundancer. I compared things like:
- size/weight and found the SR's were almost always heavier in a given size range. That told me they are better built.
- interior layouts and found I liked the SR layouts better
- fabrics, carpets and vinyls and found SR uses better quality materials than many manufacturers
- most everyone I talked with said the SR's ride very well and were seakindly
- etc., etc., etc.

Like any purchase we make, there are lots of options from a wide variety of sources. Sure, there are newbs who buy SR's without doing their homework because they've heard what a nice boat it is, but I'd venture a guess that for every newb who buys one, there are more who buy one as their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th boat. They have moved up to a SR after having owned a few other brands, and that, in itself, speaks volumes about what people think of SR's.

I think it's funny that Sea Ray owners are smart enough to be successful and have too much money to plop down on an expensive boat, but dumb enough to not know how to handle it or to be too drunk to drive it all of the time. Seems a bit contradictory...

This is what is sad from the article:

"The passengers were not wearing life vests at the time of the crash. State law does not require the use of life vests."

The firefighter drowned they stated. So I am assuming he was alive before he went into the water. Could a PFD saved his life? Maybe but we will never know now. Sad.

I just don't get it. If you have a safety device (PFD) that will increase significantly your chances of survival if you got into the water why do people not wear them? It isn't like they are not comfortable. Maybe it isn't "cool" to wear a PFD while underway..........who knows. I do know far too many people lose their lives needlessly.

End of soap box.....

I agree with you completely. I have a Mustang inflatable PFD that I wear whenever I am underway and I generally forget that I am wearing it. I actually have two of them and wear the other one when I am kayaking. That being said, I never see anyone else besides LEO wearing them.

I find it disturbing that the folks are using the death of a young man to bash a boat brand and basically condemn anybody who has a Sea Ray. I guess to some ignorance IS bliss. My faith in the human race is dwindling....

I have a pretty old Sea-Ray and I bought it for one reason, quality. From the survey to the boat yard during repairs everyone who gets a good look at the "bones" of this boat comments on the what an outstanding boat this is. The extended vacation we are on right now has caused my wife and I to discuss two things that are pertinent to this thread: We are so glad we have a Sea-Ray now because it is doing great in all situations. We want to get a slightly larger boat (Sea-Ray 36 Sedan Bridge) in the not too distant future.
Quality, built in America, what more could you ask for?

There's also something to be said for the location of the dealership to where the accident happened. We have Sea Ray / Bayliner and Cobalt / Larson dealers in Kelowna. You predominantly see Sea Ray and Cobalts on the lake. GFC asked me if we had a Cobalt dealer when touring the lake just because of the number of them on the water and at docks at homes on the lake.

It doesn't matter what brand a person is driving on the lake...there are idiots and people who lack common sense driving every brand on the water. It's not exclusive to any one brand of boat.

Exactly. I notice bad driving with all brands. I would imagine all brands have similar percentage of newbies. Myself, I didn't own a sea ray until boat #6, so hopefully I'm past the newbie stage.

I didn't see on the THT thread where they were bashing the boat, or quality of. They were saying it seems there is more accidents with new operators in Sea Rays. I agree. I also agree it's more with any brand of cruiser. You just don't see a bunch of people partying on other fishing style boats. THT is more fishing oriented.

I know on LKN if you gave someone a two horn signal blast, to alert them you are going to ovetake them on their port side, they would probably wave at you or flip you off because they have no knowledge of what horn blasts mean.
If you hailed another vessel on the VHF asking them to slow to idle speed, so you can give them a no wake pass all you would hear is crickets. Cruisers and go fast and party boats don't monitor the VHF.......mostly.

So, I don't think they are bashing Sea Ray quality, just that most people whom own "Sea Rays" are less experienced at operating their vessel and have no intention to learn. We have a thread right here on CSR that is "bashing" crazy people on the water.

The only fishing boats that drive me crazy are the bass boat guys running 70mph down lake to catch the fastest fish on the water, BASS!

I was just wondering does did anyone see where it said he was a newb? I didn't see it, also I don't think anyone here or on THT were born boating so at one time or another we were all newbs. I know when i started at 17 years old I did my share of learning but still messed up. Can anyone here honestly say that in all there years of boating they never threw a wake, or missed a bouy or maybe had to much sun and joy juice. Just saying using such a horrible accident to bash new boaters and to stereo type people who own the brand is just horrific. It's all brands and experienced people who die on the water every year not just sea ray owning newbs. Just my .02

I didn't see it in the sales package that I must have a complete lack of common sence to own and operate my Weekender. Look we've all done it, well not all, but I have. Spent the day on the water, gone in to a great dockside bar, and drank to much. Don't be another boater to miss that all important turn, stop drinking, BEFORE you become another Sea Ray accident for this fool or any others to write about! My thoughts and condolences to the FD family and to his family.

Amen! Wear your PFD Pack cause I know you don't float!!! :)

.... THT is more fishing oriented...
I've been a member there for years and my first thought was the same as 'hopper's. I guess my mind focused too much on fishing threads because I never noticed the Sea Ray bashing. I rarely went to the "Tiki Bar" style section.

That said, Sea Ray guys are by and large not anglers. At least that's my take after reading hundreds of posts here. I can't say for certain but I know I've never read one fishing report on CSR. While the Amberjack might be a nice fishing boat, I was startled to learn the fishbox on the Sportsman model opened toward the bow. I still can't figure that one out.

Oh and btw....THE SELLER WAS FUNDED YESTERDAY AND I NOW OWN A BEAUTIFUL 2004 SEA RAY SUNDANCER!!!!!!!!!!!
