Has anyone installed the transducer this way? I don't want to drill through the hull. I have a Garmin 4000 unit.

You need a shoot-thru hull that is affixed to the inside bottom of the hull. Check Airmar's website to see which one is compatible with your display, or call Jim (BOE) and he'll set you up.

thanks, are they reliable? will not be in deep water.

I had terrible luck with thru-hull transducers on my speedboats. But the one on my current boat seems to work fine. They are touchy and dependant on a lot of things. If there is ANY air between the transducer and the water, they don't work. Location is important so you don't put it where air pockets travel under the boat.

I replaced the thru-hull transducer with a transom mount one on one of my speedboats it worked flawlessly. I won't replace mine as long as it continues to work OK, but the minute it acts up, I would not hesitate to swap it out with a transom mount style. If I were to install one from scratch, I would go transom mount for sure.

Just my .02

Jim,

Does your boat have an inner liner? Meaning, is your bilge floor finished gelcoat like the topside of your boat? I'm not sure if it does or doesn't, but if so you basically have a double hull bottom and that makes it much harder to use a shoot-thru. If not, you can do as Tobnpr mentioned.

Transom mount can be fine, but a properly installed shoot-thru (or through-hull) will be more reliable as it gets cleaner water and there is no chance of it snagging anything.

i put in an airmar shoot through hull, I got it from jim @ boe it works fine with my lowrance hds 7

I had one installed recently. Before, I was using a transom mount and it always displayed junk at the surface down to about 3 feet due to prop wash.

Since installing this unit, I have had crystal clear soundings. When the sounder indicates fish, now I know they are fish and not anomilies.
