Throttle Cable Replacement

The condition of my bridge cable was pretty bad. The biggest pain was cutting all the platic ties and pulling it. I tied a string to one end so it would be easier to pill back through. I also discovered one of the ends on the old cable was bent.

The first thing to do was to remove all the ends to install on the new cable. Funny thing was in the merc manual it describe the adjustment of a brass stop, but this one was upgraded with the plastic parts.

Next step is to route the cable up to the bridge, being carful not to bend it excessivly. Then I secured the cable to the throttle lever and routed the other end to the engine. I then slipped the cable stop over the bolt.

The next step is to adjust the ends of the cable. The adjustments are so at idle, the carb butterflies are setting on the idle screw. The other is WOT. When the throttle is full open, the butterflies also need to be wide open. These adjustments need to be made carfully, so take your time.

The last adjustment will have to be in the water. Setting idle. According to my manual, with the boat loaded and in gear, set idle to 750-800rpm.

I also did a price match thing at WM. I found the cables at Boatersland for $86.49 for both cable, a 16ft and 30ft, printed the page and WM gave them to me at the same price. Saved about $100.

Don't you have to have the "smart" or on board computer system?

I'm not sure. It looks pretty simple a control head for each helm and a control unit and actuator for each motor. This website has a little more information: http://www.foreandaftmarine.com/7-KE-4.htm

My local marine store showed them to me yesterday when I asked about new cables and I was amazed. You only need one control head per station because shift and throttle are all in the one unit. And they are so easy to use, very cool.

Keep me updated. A cool mod for later if it works on our boats. Cost?

I'm guessing around 4 grand...... I'm getting a price from the local marine store for my boat this week.

2 cables= $84+time

4k is kind of spendy. Are the cables disconnected? What happens if the unit fails, do you still have control or does it shut down and you are dead in the water? Any backup?

Is the 4K for just one station or both the bridge and cabin?

I am thinking of changing the throttle cables on our 96 - 300da as well. How did you determine the proper length?

Is it printed on the end by the controls or the carb?

If murphy's law rules :smt021 and I have to pull the cables to measure are cables a stock item or do they need to be ordered??
