Never had a throttle cable off or apart. My Merc manual doesn't show a diagram or anything, just how to adjust it at the transom.

The engine bay hatch fell onto the motor on the 260DA and bent the shaft part that connects to the carburator. I straightened it some but it still binds and won't rev up. Looks like it slides inside that bracket or something?

Can I still try straightening or will it break? How does that thing work anyway?

Thanks,

Sounds like you need another throttle cable. Not expensive. You can try to bend, it's unlikely to break, but if it does, well....

There is a plastic piece threaded onto the end , and is fastened to the engine and does not move. This threaded portion is meant to adjust your idle position, So when you place the controller in neutral, your Carb will be against the idle speed screw. Then the inner cable moves based on throttle controller position to move the throttle lever on the carb.

Thats kinda what I was thinking. Except mine appears to be metal, maybe cast. Good point about trying and if it breaks I'm no worse off huh.
Thanks.

The newer ones are plastic, our older ones are metal. Might as well try bending it back, but I'd just replace it as they aren't very expensive.

The plastic ones will break, the metal ones bend and are usually 'goners' when that happens. Take the old one with you to the marine supply so you can 'match' the cable diameter - the earlier models used thinner cable than the later ones (or the other way arouond - I can't remember).
