Three year old captain's chair not aging well

That's terrible! I'm assuming your boat is a hardtop so those seats shouldn't be sitting in the direct sunlight non-stop. Without a doubt I'd contact Sea Ray.

The boat is completely enclosed, but we do get a fair bit of sunshine in Seattle, despite our reputation. I had always assumed the seats were a nice leather, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

I would have called them long before it got to that point. That is totally unacceptable.

Do you have someone detail the boat? Or what are you using to clean them that looks like chemical damage to me and not sunlight.

No one cleans the interior - so no chemicals have ever been applied to the surfaces. Though, we have put 500 hours on the boat over three seasons. Still, I would have expected much better wear.

My 11 year old seats look pristine and I'm sure that they get much
more intense sun down here is SWFL than Seattle. They appear to be dry rotted.

Yeah, my wife and I are both disappointed. Thanks for the feedback. We will bring this up with our dealer.

Looks like a bad roll of vinyl to me. I'd NEVER expect that on a few year old Sea Ray. I'm sure they will take care of that for you.

It's not leather, but certainly marine grade vinyl that should look better than that even if they were mistreated. Call your dealer. Sea Ray should stand help out because something isn't right.

WADR, I don't believe the vinyl is marine grade. It looks to be cheap car seat stuff.

dgeller.....

As you hear others say here, this appears to be an anomaly as our seats do not deteriorate this fast. I have been on many 540's here in sunny Florida and none of them look like this. Can I also assume your local dealer is Lake Union and if so whom are you talking with there?..(you can PM me if you wish to go offline). If possible can you share the HIN of this boat so I can inquire internally if we experienced a material failure during the time your boat was built? Really the only time I have seen this is when a foreign chemical was used to clean the material but if you are the original owner and have always preformed the maintenance yourself, something has to be going on here.

Feel free to put me in the loop if you wish and I will advocate for you the best I can.

Rusty

My 10 year old Captain's chair looks brand new still... That has to be a manufacturers defect.

I did the cockpit vinyl in my 87 Sundancer last winter. Much of it was original, and none of it looked like that.
Two possibilies:
1. Seats were made with a bad/defective roll of marine vinyl. If that's the case there is a good chance that a few other boats had the same problem.
2. It is a result of cleaning with something very aggressive. That could have been either a harsh cleaner, or an aggressive instrument that was used to scrub them. Is it possible that someone worked on the boat at some point, and scrubbed down the seats with something before it was returned to you?

You would think if it were harsh chemicals that did this that they would've probably been used on the other seating surfaces and those would be showing the same deterioration.

Thank you Rusty. Appreciate your joining the conversation. I'll message you our hull number.

We've never applied any cleaning materials to the seats. Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this soon. I suspect our dealer Lake Union Sea Ray will also be responsive and work to correct the anomaly. I appreciate everyone's feedback on this.

Important update: I heard back from both my dealer (Lake Union Sea Ray) and Sea Ray directly. The awesome news is that my dealer is coordinating directly with Sea Ray to have the seat coverings completely replaced. It remains a mystery to everyone why the damage occurred, but we're extremely grateful that our local Seattle dealer Lake Union Sea Ray was quick to assist and provided what can only be described as the perfect response. I also want to thank Sea Ray's Rusty Higgins for taking an interest in our situation, offering to provide assistance and following-up.

We recently crossed the 500 hours threshold after our third season and look forward to many, many more. In fact, we're looking forward to Fall and Winter cruising between Seattle and British Columbia.
