I’m getting a replacement long block. 496 mag 375hp.
Either a new long block from Mercury or one from Jasper.
It’s for a 2006 Sundancer 260. Obviously a lot less money for the remanufactured Jasper, which is very attractive.
Still kind of unsure as to which way to go.
Id be interested to hear from anyone that has experience with Jasper.
Thanks

An absolute no on Jasper anything!
These guys specialize in marine and have a good Rep. here on CSR.

I used one years ago and never had a issue. Luck of the draw with reman. Jasper was half the cost back then.

The guy who has worked on my boat for 20 years has put several Jasper long and short blocks into customers boats with good results. I do not have any first hand knowledge thank God.

The resident mechanic at our club has installed many Jaspers. Over the years he has had a couple of problems that Jasper took care of. Many replacement engine issues are related to the installer.

I have a one jasper remanufactured in my boat. Runs great ... very strong.

Marina repair facility backs their warranty 100%.

Had it installed over a year ago.

I bought a boat, had a jasper motor (350 mag VP) installed 4 years prior with less than 5 hours on it. I was concerned I would have issues. Had the boat for 2 seasons, put over 100 hours in it and no issues at all. The person I sold it too has had it 3 seasons and no issues either.
I have also heard great things about Michigan motorz

Jasper isn't that bad, the issue is they are assembly line re-builders, the people assembling isn't being checked like a real assembler would do,using plastic gauge and the like. So there are going to be failures, more like the luck of the draw. They do back their sales but not the work to replace it. That said their success rate is way more then their failure rate. That said I had a Jasper engine in one of my boats and it was fantastic. I replaced the engine in a weekend and it out lasted me. But I have heard of the failures.

I have never heard of Michigan motorz, but I usually rebuild my own stuff. So that doesn't mean much.

I puy a jasper in my first vehicle I owned. Never a problem with them. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

Could your engine be rebuilt? I'm looking into that and it seems like the best route. My local builders are real good and then you could also put some good parts in there. It would come out cheaper in my situation.

Had a jasper put in a Jeep back in the day, ran great. It developed a couple oil leaks. Went back to the installer and they were fixed under warranty.
No complaints here

Agree with the installer comment….it seems that 3 different mechanics can work on a boat, depending on the issue, and it either gets fixed or it gets fixed for a period of time or it does not get fixed at all. Sometimes the initial issue gets fixed and another issue is created….The installer/mechanic is the part that makes it successful or a flop.

Here in our area within 100 miles on the Ohio River there is no mechanics that can get anything done in a professional manner. Getting older and unable to get to things it is a total PIA. On top of that I am willing to pay up, just no takers.
