This ought to be controversial.....which Sea Ray planes the fastest?

I see other boats " On Plane" but it is hard to tell if I am on plane or not when I drop down below 18 MPH. so i guess the question is if I am not really still "on Plane " at 15 -18 mph am i wasting Gas? and I should stay at my typical cruise speed of 20 -22 mph @ 3,000 - 3200 RPM.
This is my first boat so i don't have any other thing to compare it to. John G

I generally ease the throttle forward pretty slowly until I get to about 3400 RPM and I'm up, so I really have no idea how fast she will actually get up at WOT. I think my normal launch takes about 6-8 seconds, but its probably more like 10. I'll time it tomorrow both ways and let you know.

I like putting loads on my engines gradually instead of just dumping the throttle, so I just don't do it very often.

I hear you...with the power & TQ you have it would be possible to "un-hub" a prop by dumping it.

I would lean toward proping the boat, I had a set of B3's cupped and snap out of the hole pretty quick now. Never timed it but it jumps up much better than when they were stock.

I was at a SeaRay in water boat show down/demo day deal down at Somer's Point last fall. They took us out in a 340DA and when we exited the no wake channel, the driver hammered the boat down at full throttle. We had 7 people on the boat including the driver. I was surprised as hell how fast that thing popped out of the water and got on plane.

We were at a MM Tie-up last weekend. A guy was there with a 2007 340 with the big blocks and said it was crazy how fast he could get up on plane. He also said it was almost like driving a bowrider but be prepared for the fuel bill at the dock after a run up the north end of the lake and back.

OK. I need a ride in a 340DA

Who's got one in eastern PA that I can go for a ride in?:smt043

My buddy just bought a 2000 340 with 5.7's on shafts. It tops out in the mid 30's maybe... not terribly fast but but it's true... the boat planes instantly and will stay comfortably on the step down to something like 12 mph! I'm not sure if the stern drives react the same as this but I'm sure they're similar.
Some boats (like my 240) you have to push up on plane; there's a big bow rise / rooster tail... the engine(s) roar(s) and then you get up on the step and go. 340's aren't like that; they want to plane from the start so the transition that some boats have doesn't even exist with them. You move the throttles... and you're planing.
The 340's 'transition to plane' is one of the more impressive traits I've seen with any boat... and I've been around (cuz I can't get enough of this boat stuff!).
I'd love to have one!!

Note to self; plant money tree!

You can settle for a 330DA with big blocks too if you can't find a 340DA and you will get about the same planing time. (Then have them open it up and you won't believe how fast the 330DA is. My dealer said they had one with outdrives hit 52 mph. :wow:)

As far as all of the bowriders are concerned, the fastest is an '05+ 205 Sport (in 2004 it was called a 200 Sport) with the 5.0L MPI and an Alpha. That thing is wickedly fast out of the hole! With a High 5 prop, that would make a monster ski boat.

Yea, I have to say mine pops out of the whole and planes within seconds. It is great for wakeboarding in this respect, not a HUGE difference between this and the inboards Ive been on, surprisingly.

My guess would be the 195 Sport w/220HP/4.3/Alpha

http://www.searay.com/configurator.asp?pmid=140239&tab=1&

or the 205 Sport with the 260 HP Stern Drive

http://www.searay.com/2009_sea_ray_sport_boats_175_sport.asp?display=brochure&tab=1&modelid=140240

I am strictly thinking Ft. Lbs of TQ/weight ratio

My 195 is the same as described above...it planes fast and with the high five prop and a hydrofoil it will plane in about 3-4 seconds....that was achieved with about 2/3 throttle and having the trim just right.....when the conditions are glassy...it feels faster but haven't really timmed it.
