Im going to paint some areas on my outdrive this weekend and on the interlux can they recommend special thinner 216 to wipe down the sand residue. West marine wanted like 24 bux for a can :smt009
Is this really needed,or would aceton do the trick?
Or is there another brand/type at lowes the same as the 216?

Call the Interlux technical service line and thell them you need a substitue for 216. My guess is that it is not ketone based and acetone will not be a suitable reducer.

I recently got into this with a wood finish. When I used acetone, I got horrible fisheyes. I called Interlux to find that the thinner base was naptha, not ketone. I spent he money for the right reducer and cured the fisheye problem.

Attached is a link from the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for Thinner 216.

According to the MSDS, this stuff is mostly Xylenes with as much as 25% Ethyl Benzene in it. Most of the home improvement places carry Xylenes (a mixture of all three di-methyl benzene isomers) as a solvent, usually in the paint section. In the link I found, it is about $18.50 per gallon as compared to $35 for a gallon of 216. The lack of Ethyl Benzene will just cause it to evaporate more slowly.

Acetone is an ketone based solvent (di-methyl ketone) which is water soluable. Xylenes are not very water soluable at all and are an aromatic solvent similar to benzene. They would not react in a similar way in a mixture with paints or coating materials.

Hope this helps

He is not thinning the paint, he is just removing sanding residue. Acetone will work fine. Almost any solvent which does not leave a residue itself will work fine.

Do use an evaporating solvent though and not a degreaser/etc.
