Thermostats on a car allow the engine to heat faster and enable the heater....they are not necessary.....except to allow the heat to be turned on earlier.....
What is the need for a T-stat on a boat ?
Thanks
Pete

I disagree. Thermostats are essential so that the engine operates in it's correct temp range. Just like the 3 bears... "this one's too hot... this one's too cool... this one is just right!".

A cold running engine uses more fuel, which can leave more deposits on the engines valves, fuel contamination in the oil, and just crappy performance. :smt089

A hot running engine can crack cylinder heads, damage bearings, and other nasty stuff that kills engines. :smt013

Mind you, I'm not a mechanic so this is my uneducated opinion on the matter.

Yep I run 175* thermostats on a freshwater lake. :smt001

pete;this is not the reason you have a thermostat in your auto. while they are convenient by products of the thermostat the reason is to maintain a constant-consistant engine operating temp

Thanks all..I thought for years that it was either open or closed.....so it regulates the water through the radiator or heat exchanger.....I have a closed cooling system on my boat...but riser's and manifold are raw water cooled....thanks again.....
