Not if you keep on top of it! You should be maintaining this monthly at least. The toilet "puck" may work but I am leery of having bleach in contact with the rubber parts. It seems to wear them out prematurely (at least it seems so to me).

I'm with Ken on the monthly maintenance, it never gets ripe, nor grows anything lol, I flush it out monthly and sometimes more than that during the months of July n August

I live aboard for 3 months in the summer. I used to clean the sump every 3-4 weeks. I then found started to use bromine pucks that you would use in a hot tube. I think bromine is not as corrosive as a chlorine puck. The puck slowly dissolves and every 4 weeks I replace it.
I have done this for 3 years now, and the rubber and plastic parts have not needed replacing.

I do however clean the entire system once yearly as a small scum line still appears.

Problem with the shower sump, is that it usually uses a standard mini bilge pump that is not designed to suck hair or debris and needs a filter.

Since I installed a diaphragm pump the sump is much more cleaner that before!

Check out the Whale Gulper pump and the Whale grey water sump which is completely sealed! They work great!

A guy on our dock puts white vinegar in the sump monthly he says is eats the soap scum.............other wise I would say my 9 year old cheese eating kid who can clog the strongest vaccuflush in the world.....

The trick is to not let the hair enter the drain, try cutting some plastic screening material to lay over the drain. Then use only liquid soap on the boat. It will not solidify in the sump.

Good luck
