The RIGHT way to replace fuel lines...?

Ron, I just checked the price list...damn, it is pricey. It would have a wholesale price around $10.00 / foot for a size 6 in a 50 ft coil. Yeah, that would add up real quick.

Was in West Marine and a local mom & pop marine supply store today and the 3/8" prices out at about $3.10/ft and they have it in stock. The go2marine price is better but shipping could even things out. I sure could buy the stuff at West marine myself and take it in to a shop along with the old hoses and just say "reproduce these." A very reliable source tells me that a precise fit of fitting-to-hose is of the utmost importance as well as the composition of the fittings (must be brass). The shop has to REALLY know what they're doing and be familiar with marine stuff.

I'm betting that most hydraulic shops know what they're doing. All lines should be pressure tested before they hand them back to you to check for leaks. I would think a small shop would have no problems explaining and showing you how the process works so you can gain a better comfort level.

So what's wrong with barbed fittings and sst clamps

Probably nothing - not as nice a "touch," I suppose.

All lines should be pressure tested
The pressure contained in hydraulic lines (and in diesel fuel lines) is significantly greater than the pressure in our measely gasoline lines, so you're probably right.

Ron,

FWIW, I dont recall mine stating anything about E10. All the docs are on the boat anyway.

Is there any reason (other than aesthetics) that the barbed fittings and stainless clamps (as Norcal stated) could NOT be used. I ask since I typically get a member of the power squadron or CG Aux. to come down and do an inspection. I would hate to fail, especially of I spent a chunk of dough on the new A1 lines.... that would bite!!

I think barbs and clamps are perfectly acceptable, just not as "OEM." Did a bit more "prying" and discovered these clamps.

Mark, if you have the handy dandy little SeaRay suitcase containing the white looseleaf binder and all original documentation, you'll find the same literature I posted above. I was wondering if you have the sticker I have by the fuel fill.

Oh, the sticker by the fill....!! Duh. No I definately do not have that. PO probably took it off or it wore off....who knows.

The clamps look decent. 316 is good stuff. Do you know what the typical home depot or b-lowes stuff is made from? the west stores will bend you over on price!!!

What worries me about HD and Lowe's hoseclamps is the screw. Some may not be SS steel, which lead to corrosion of the slots on the clamp part. I order hose clamps from, of all places, a plumbing website. They are very cost effective and stainless through and through.

Ron...do have the link to your plumbing supply house? I use large clamps on my scuba tanks to hold a pony tank to the main tank. I am having the exact problem you mentioned. The screw mechanaism is rusting after just a few dives. I need large clamps as the tank diameter is 8". I can't seem to find any large enough ALL ss clamps at any of the local HW stores.

Dom,

It's expensive stuff, but if you buy the system, you'll never, ever need a different hose clamp. Get Norma's Normetta Worm Drive Banding and Normetta Worm Drive Buckles. This stuff is great! You can make clamps of any size. Not cheap by any means, but 30 meters of banding will last a lifetime.

Best regards,

This is the sticker I was mentioning above. The fuel fill is just to the right of it. Not bad condition for a 20 year old sticker.

All hose clamps are not created equal...there are different grades of stainless steel.
These clamps are 305 stainless. And, the bands are cut all the way through. Ever notice how this type of clamp actually cuts into the hose because of this? They are the most common, but I'm changing them out on my boat with these:

316 stainless has much better corrosion resistance than 305. Also, smooth band clamps won't cut the hose like the others:
