The official "Stray Current II" thread. '07 260DA

After I ran a rag over it, it doesn’t look like it melted anymore. That was kind of the sludgy oil buildup. It’s the damnedest thing though it was fine and I did an oil change with the same oil I’ve been using for my hundred hour interval for the last 800 hours. I went from no known leakage to at least a cup in the pan after an hour. Wasn’t overfilled or anything just failed all at once.

Dam, must have torn some how to loose that much oil in that time frame. Cheap seal or manufacture defect or 800hrs and it gave out.

As far as I know, Original Kawasaki oem.

Made it 17 years and 950 operational hours at 3600 rpm. Had 220 or so on it and was INOP when I bought it in 19.

Ah, miss-understood that's a good run for that seal. Just poor timing to fail.

Lots of that going around the last few months. I made the mistake of looking at the numbers last week

I also requested a quote on a Sea Hunt 275 Ultra. Even with 80k down it’s still over 1100 a month. That’s a lot of maintenance items on a paid off boat…

Almost looks like a better option moneywise to refurb the genset and drop a new 496 mag HO Horizon than to replace the boat

Boating is not for the faint of heart as you know. That Sea Hunt would also limit you to only day boating and your current DA has way more amenities. But that's just me.

I’m kind of thinking 50+ WOT and 35+ cruise coupled with the range may be more useful than the baby cruiser. The 260 really doesn’t have the space or the range to take full advantage of its features unfortunately. That Sea hunt could get me up into Tampa/Sarasota or down to Marco in a reasonable day trip and also have the ability to outrun weather. I really wanted to take the 260 to the keys but I don’t have enough tank to make it to Everglades city and then from there even to the closest point in the keys following the third rule.

We really can’t overnight it down here because the dog gets terrible anxiety in the cabin and we have nobody to leave him with either. We haven’t spent the night on it since we moved.

I just can’t bring myself to finance that much of a depreciating asset, and I won’t cut a check for that amount. I also don’t want to spend less and be in a light boat that’ll kick my ass or wind up in the same position where I’m chasing years of neglect $1500 dollars at a time

Maybe the next major repair just equals a re-power with a new crate 496.

1st world problems :D

Even new boats have issues. Every time I change boats always hope for less issues. Just seem to get different issues. Seems to come with the territory. Your October cruise looked very nice. Try to keep that in mind

My motor mount kit came today for the generator pan, and I swung by the Upholstery shop to check out a sample of my new interior.

I think the tan to tie into the dashboard and the existing tan accents, as well as the royal navy piping will really tie it all together.

What do you figure that generator setup weighs?
I can probably find a spec, but I had a coworker help me pull it and it weighs 3x whatever the spec is based on location

I’d guess 250-265

Wow thats a lot. Explains why in your pictures your swim deck is sitting much closer to water than mine.
Could be. I also have the freshwater cooled 383 so there’s the extra weight of the closed cooling, And generally anytime my boat is in the water the water tank is at least half full, and the fuel tank is generally full. I’ve also got a bunch of crap on board.

It’s definitely sitting higher without the unit

Would you mind sharing a picture of how yours sits?

True to form, everything is a can of worms. Looks like I’ll be needing a new exhaust manifold as the corrosion at the mating surface to the catalyst is too far gone. Naturally this will result in more broken fasteners and further $$ parts

We are most times Full water, plus gear and 1/2 tank plus of fuel. Generally when we go out its for days at a time on the hook. I do not have the Generator on mine and Ive seen other 260 pics that sit low like yours so i always assumed the genny made a big difference.

That is more or less what it looks like right now. Yours almost looks like it sits a little lower in the front, but it’s hard to tell

I think I’ve only got about 8 gallons in the water tank, but the fuel tank is full with the picture two posts up at my dock

I also think my bottom paint line might come up a little higher than yours

Yes its hard to tell by the bottom paint but it makes sense mine would sit lower at the Bow.

That sucks, but glad you pulled the unit and found it now as opposed to after an in boat, seal replacement. BTW, sorry for the late reply on that leak, but on a really good monitor, zoomed in, that seal looked damaged.
Thoughts?

It looked damaged when I took the picture but after wiping it with a rag, it was just a sludge buildup at the bottom. I’m not really sure what caused it to fail. I popped the old seal out today, but I didn’t see any noticeable grooving or telltale signs of failure The sling radiates out from the crankshaft though, so that is definitely it

Of course, once I get it all put back together with a new exhaust manifold, the PTO seal is going to leak…
