My Jabsco is not a direct replacement. The PO had some funky bracket fabricated to hold the pump in the proper position.

I think if the original pump goes bad that the Jabsco is the replacement, since there is no original pumps available. I found out today from the place I am ordering the governor that the tension spring is no longer available through them. Doesn't mean you can't get it, but not from them anyhow. Wonder if it's available at all? I was looking through McMaster Carr at springs. There are some close to the 64# listed for the governor spring, but I will have to take measurements. If I need to do it after the governor replacement I will let you know what I find.

I GET IT NOW! It's a Warner Bros. cartoon reference. K-9 is very clever. Failed English 101, possibly paranoid-schizophrenic, lacks a sense of humor, but clever.

Mark, keep me posted on the genny saga. You never know when my black box will act it's age!

I called today, because the order was listed as "pending". They told me they expect to receive parts from Generac tomorrow and ship out as soon as possible. I'm guessing I'll get them next week maybe. If I remember the camera I'll take some pics for you. Seems Generac parts are like Norcold. You have to go through a dealer and they have to get them from the factory.

I've dealt with the Generac folks down there in Maryland (Kelly??) for the points and the condenser for my QS. They were very helpful and their prices were a tad more reasonable than the place here in NJ and MUCH more reasonable than the outfit on Long Island. $9 to UPS ground a box the you could fit a baseball into.

:smt001 I now pronounce you....sso:thumbsup:

Does anyone know were I can get the aluminum dash trim for my sorrento because it was one of the first made and has relief cuts on all of the bends Thanks Paul

Haven't been here for a while, been busy, busy !

The last few times we had been away in Solitude, I had noticed that when she was hot after long runs, the oil pressure was dropping down to near zero at idle and there was a bit of a bottom end rattle. So, with this going on, I figured that it was about time to think about a re power.
After reading thru the threads here on power requirements, I figured the poor old 1992 5.7L 260 HP was never enough to power a 270 WE thru a Bravo II gear box. So, maybe a new 6.2L EFI (377cid) would be the way to go, a bit more grunt without having to alter the engine bed by retaining the small block motor.
Next thing to do was to check out prices. A new 6.2 FWC here in Australia is near the $35K !! Small heart flutter when I found that out, so I had a look at importing one from the USA. About $15k landed here for a new one and about $8k for a re-manufactured.
In the mean time, I was talking to a friend and he told me about a engine builder here in Hervey Bay who builds engines from all over Australia, one of the top builders in the country here in the Bay. They do a lot of performance auto stuff, on and off the track. So I went and paid them a visit at their workshop, hidden away in one of the back streets. What a supprise, the workshop is like a operating theater with all these beautiful engines sitting around on their stands in various stages of construction. Over in another corner of the workshop is a glass sound proof room with an all computerised 2500 HP engine dynometer ! I was impressed, these guys look as though they know what they are doing !!

I told them what I needed and they said, for under $7k, they'll bore and stroke the motor to 383cid (6.4L), new cam 208 degree (origional) to 212 degree, with double roller chain, new roller cam followers. They say this will shift the max torque from 4500 - 5000 rpm back to 3000-4000 rpm where the boat will normally run. The only real request I had was that the motor should idle smoothly at 650 rpm so the boat is easy to dock. They reckon I won't see the difference with a 212 cam at low speeds as it is only one step up from origional. Also with wild cams with exhaust thru the prop, you can suck up a gut full of water !
Also, the motor will be "blue printed" and dynamatically balanced.

Decision was made ! The motor came out 2 weeks ago, and I should have it back end of next week. In the meantime, I pulled the transom plate (not before time), the bottom 2 transom bolts had completly rotted away, (there had been water leaking into the boat) so they will be replaced with 316 SS. The exhaust elbows have been sent away too, to get surface ground, the only place salt water gets and there was a bit of corrosion. She is FWC, so the manifolds and risers are OK.

So, when I get it all back together, they say it should be better than a new motor !! They say it should make 345 HP, but we'll find out all that stuff when it goes on the dyno next week.

I'll keep you posted. Summer is on its way down here, I can't wait too get the old girl going again.

Chris,

You are definitely my kind of guy!!. Your horse power is not as important as the torque and it sounds like with the 212 deg. duration cam you are spot on in that quest. You didn't mention a cylinder head change so I guess you are staying with the original heads ...just cleaned up with a valve job...keeping the original 1.94" intake valve size. The small valve kills some top end power but expands that torque curve:thumbsup:. My guess on the dyno will show about 340~360 HP at 4800~5200 RPM and a torque curve that comes on strong at about 1800~2200 RPM in the low 300 lb. ft range climbs to about 400 lbs ft between 3200~4200 RPM and falls to about 350 lbs ft after 4500 RPM. You didn't mention what you are doing with your carb and intake but I can suggest the Holley Mechanical Secondary Marine 4 barel on a dual plane square bore intake. Check this thread: http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21627

I am very interested in your dyno numbers...let us know when you know.

Hi John, Two new cylinder heads are going on with bigger inlets and exhausts, they told me the sizes but I forget, overwhelmed by the appearence of the workshop. Also, the existing combustion chamber sizes were 60 cc and with the new heads they will go out to 67.4 cc. The ports are all polished up on the new heads so that should make a few more horses. The new valves will have 3/8 spindles up from the 5/16, valve springs will go from 250 lbs to 300 lbs and will require cast rockers and new push rods.
So far, the carb. will stay. It is a 650 cf/min Weber. It was giving great results on the motor, all plugs (Iridum) were a nice tan. We may have to change the control rods once we run her on the dyno. The inlet manifold will stay, it is a square bore, dual plane. I was thinking of going with an Edelbrock alloy air gap, to cut down on weight and keep the carb cool. That may come later.
The target is 400ft/lbs at 3500rpm and 360 - 380 HP at 4800rpm. I guess we'll find that out a bit later !!
I didn't realise how many bits come off a motor when you strip them down. I have spent the last weeks cleaning and painting. All the bits have had an overhaul, starter, alternator, Dizzy etc.
Anyway, I'll post up the progress and the numbers as we progress.

Chris,
The Weber Carbs are tops...I have run them on Porsche's and VW Dune Buggys and they are probably the best to be had. I think based on my experience with small block Chevy's (are they Holden there?) you are going to meet your number goals. Good job that you have the Bravo II drive because with 400 lbs ft in the water any thing less would not last...especially in a heavy boat.

Thought you might be interested to know...the Marine Max (formerly Bassett) in Lake Park where your boat originated, closed this past June due to our poor economy. Hopefully it will re-open when things pick up.

I know you must be excited waiting to get on the water with new power....like getting a new boat again:thumbsup:,
Don't forget to share those dyno results.

The wife and I watched "Australia" with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman last weekend on Pay Per View cable. I think many of the last scenes were filmed near Darwin. Are you near there?...Did you see the film and if you did was it an accurate portrayal of Australia during the World War II years? We have to visit there some time...seems to be a place we would enjoy.

Would you believe, my wife and I had the DVD rented from the video shop and also watched the show again last weekend !! Darwin is about 2000 miles away to the north west. Most of the filming was done at Bowen, only just up the coast from us. We are on the east coast, at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef and about 150 nm north of the capital city of Queensland, Brisbane. If you go to my profile on this site, I have posted a whole bunch of pictures taken along the coast here. http://clubsearay.com/forum/album.php?albumid=58

I did know Marine Max at North Palm Beach had closed, someone had posted it on the site here some months ago. A pity, I was going to see if they had any records or info about the boat, but I was too late. Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with what I did find and especially the times when she was at the Light House Point Marina at Hillsboro. I had a really nice email back from the owners of the marina, they have been running the marina for 40 years and the dock master who had been there all that time, remembered the boat and also she was named "Solitude" when there.

I think that if you guys visited down here, you would think you were still at home. Only a few differences, drive on the other side of the road, the sun rises in the east, goes thru the NORTH and sets in the west. I lived in the USA for nearly 4 years (at Uni.) and it was so similar to Australia.

Yep, the SBC are in our Holdens. Most run around with a V6, about 3.5 L. I have a Mazda MX6 rice burner, you'll see it in the pictures with the boat.

Will keep you posted.

Well-I am a new-be around here.just traded for a 1988 268 sundowner big block 330 hp. After reading all these posts I believe this is the best post going for old timers with old boats. I started boating when the only plastic boats were found in the bath tub. I have put 7 hrs. on my ray and so far so good. Two small problems; My son in law poured a fuel additive in the fresh water tank by accident -oops. I think I now need a new pressure pump for the system. Also I am looking for the small plastic brackets that mount on the transom bench seat and hold the removable legs in place. Any help would be welcome. Working on some pictures
