I put an 80” TV, sound bar, subwoofer, and some theater seating in my basement man cave 3 years ago. No fireplace down there, but I do have a bar and sipping some Single Barrel Jack on a cold night helps the winter months pass.

Full disclosure: I’m a television producer. I’ll agree ..there is a lot of garbage out there, but there are also some really great shows. This is the golden age of television. Never before has there been such a selection of truly remarkable TV. Some of the shows coming out of Britain are also fantastic (BBC). Killing Eve, The Handmaid’s Tale, Better Call Saul, Bodyguard, Sharp Objects, Maniac, Barry, Ozark. These are really great shows! Maybe I’m biased. Maybe your tastes differ from mine, but there is some truly great television out there. Network is dead so far as quality though and has been for a long time. Streaming services are where the money is being spent and where the good shows are.

Bingo. That's why I have not been to a theater in a while.

British sitcoms are some of the best ever, even the old ones. We also have bought full seasons of "The Crown" as they become available and have enjoyed them as well. The networks are good for limited sports and that's about it. We watch a little local news to see how the roads are doing and get the local basketball and football scores. Nothing else is worth watching.

The Crown was on the binge watch list last winter and we really enjoyed it.
Cable has it all over broadcast. Shameless is one of the funniest shows I’ve seen in years. Would love to get the original British version on the binge watch list for next winter.

I can appreciate you taking this position based on your profession....but are there metrics that could back this up? I've never watched less TV than I do right now. Same for most of my family and friends. Many/most of the people I spend time with socially have cut the cord on cable within the past several years and most don't do anything other than movies and limited OTA as a replacement.

The last TV show I actually followed was "Lost". ha. Well...that's not entirely true...I did binge-watch Game of Thrones last year as well. But that was done under duress....and I don't regret it.

From my seat television programming seems to be nearing extinction, anything but the golden age??? But I'm not in the business! Just a consumer...

I agree about there being some arguably good TV, although not on OTA networks, but movies are where this started and they almost all suck.

Yes, but there are also some excellent films IMO. For 2018 I thought “A Star is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” were both outstanding films. And “Mission Impossible: Fallout” ..probably one of the best action movies I’ve ever seen.

We watched “First Man” about Neil Armstrong the other night. I was expecting more ..really wasn’t a fan. Acting was good, but it was slow and depressing.

One of my data points is there is rarely a "natural" buzz about a movie anymore. I rarely hear anyone discussing must see movies. They are just dying by my estimation. To add to my previous reasons they are dying, attention spans.

They now have to really compete in the market. They no longer can be the only game in even a small town. Movies came along and were easy cheap local entertainment that came alive. Now they battle TV, internet, gaming, sports, and the list goes on. For much of the country school sports and a movie was the entire list of entertainment when movies were great.

tiara in the snow 01.JPG We watched "The Wife" a couple of days ago. It's the story of a couple and the husband winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. Glen Close does a nice job. Good flick.

    Very nice, love the picture.

We went to the movies to see one that was nominated for awards, but not out on Netflix yet.

Admiral loves watching the award shows - I don't - but hey part of being married.

My wife wanted to see “A Star is Born” on demand this weekend. Reluctantly, I scrolled through to it on my FIOS PPV menu.
We saw that it was about $20.00 and decided against it. She didn’t want to see it that badly.

It’s not available for streaming yet. Only download purchase. You will be able to stream it (rent it) on the 19th.

I wasn’t going to pay to buy it. We’ll wait until after the 19th and rent it. Better still, if I get my way, we’ll wait until it comes on Netflix.
