The future of EVs? Maybe not so bad?

Heard on the news this morning that a few billionaires are launching a mining expedition to mine for rare earths needed to make these EV batteries. With the glaciers melting it is opening up new ground for mining. Next they will be expediting the melting of the glaciers to help their cause.

That's cool. Joe Biden helped cancel mining for EV components in MN earlier this year because he is pro Green Energy.

“The global drive to replace fossil fuels with climate-friendly energy alternatives has powered demand for rare earth minerals used in electric vehicle batteries and wind turbines, with major U.S. companies importing rare earths from Asia. In Myanmar, the process of mining these rare earths has produced environmental damage and human rights abuses, an Associated Press investigation found.”

Owning an EV is contributing to pollution and human rights abuse…
I think we're going to skip the EV "revolution" and stick with burning old dinosaurs. I am having my wife's deceased uncle's 1980 Ferrari 308 GTSi restored. Not sure if we're going to keep it or sell it. The guy whose shop is doing the work REALLY wants to buy it to round out his personal Ferrari collection. And I'm looking for an '08 - '12 BMW M3 convertible just for kicks.

How much before the restoration? I’d love to do an EV conversion on an old 308.

It is getting valued this week, it is part of an estate so we are selling things at FMV, less a discount for family. Looks like the FMV will be in the low $20Ks. But I would never let it be bastardized into an EV. It was the first year of mechanical fuel injection for that car to meet CA emissions. Ended up lowering the output by over 60HP. If I keep it, I am going to convert it back to quad carbs and get it back closer to 300 HP. Such a classic design.

That was my first exotic car love. I was joking about an EV conversion, but I would slap a modern corvette engine in that beast.

Does it currently run?

Unfortunately, no. That is why I have it at a shop that specializes in vintage Ferraris. They will get it running, but it could take a month or more. First thing is to hand turn the engine. Then we'll go from there. I don't think an LS crate motor would fit in there without sticking out the top. It came with a 3.0L V8 that barely fits in the engine compartment.

It was my first exotic love as well. But what I know now, and didn't know back then, was that it is a dog with the fuel injection. mid 7s 0-60. Hell, my Mazda 6 will smoke that. But you can't beat the cool factor.

Nope your Mazda 6 is 7.5S 0-60 and the 308 is 6.1S 0-60. It was actually a pretty fast car for back then. The 928 S+4 was pretty fast for the 80's and I had trouble beating my friends 308.

My Mazda 6 was a 7 0-60 (according to Car and Driver - they complained about the tires costing the 0-60 time) on the OEM tires because Mazda decided to use crossover SUV tires with a super hard compound that would spin all day if you got on the gas hard to start. I ditched those for some real tires (Continental Extremecontact) and am now in the mid 5s using the manual mode.

As for the Ferrari, the 1980 was a different animal. It was the introduction of Bosch mechanical fuel injection. They also detuned the motor to meet CA emissions. In 1980 the GTSi made 205 HP. At some point in 1982 Ferrari realized their mistake and started adding back HP. But all the documented 0-60 times I can find for the 1980 308 GTSi are 6.8 to 7.5. The GTS was a fair amount faster with about 60 extra horse power.

Either way it is a cool car and an absolutely beautiful design.

I’ve spent the evening shopping for 308s. I love and hate you.

Didn't know it was an 80 setup with CA emissions. That's a different animal with all of the detuning etc. Still as you say, a very cool car none the less.

Been done already....

If you find one that the engine has been destroyed, I could see doing the EV bit.
But if there was any hope at all of reviving the Ferrari engine or finding another one, that would be first choice.

Look about 3/4ths of the way down the page...

My boro buys electric from the local electric company (Penn Power) and resells it to my boro owned electric company. Last I checked we were paying about .18/kwh and that was about 5 years ago so pretty sure it's up over .20 now. Local news said the other night that Penn Power was raising their rates by 20% next year. That means I'll be paying about .25-.30/kwh after my boro tacks their surcharge on. They claim they raise rates to keep taxes down but we also have the 2nd highest tax rate in the county.
