A while back Frank W. posted a response to a thread that he was not going to renew his Master's license due to a number of reasons. After going through the renewal process, I agree with him and probably wouldn't go through it again.

For renewals done within the limits published by the USCG:

1) Form CG-719B -Free
2) Physical Exam with eye and hearing test -$125
3) DOT/USCG Periodic Drug Testing Form completed by USCG Medical Review Officer -$110
4) Small Vessel Sea Service Form -Free
5) Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) -$132.50
6) Renewal Processing Fee USCG -$95

It was a pain to go through this process. My normal doctor could do the physical but the drug test HAD TO BE DONE BY A USCG MRO. In addition the TWIC card is a new requirement that has a different set of issues. You must visit the TWIC office two times (I live in VA and the nearest is Baltimore).

$462.50 & three days off work

The CG decided to get out of the background check business, and figured the TSA could do it better. Cost to the professional Captain is likely not taken into account. When I first went in, they were still doing ID, so I got my fingerprints and the whole nine yards. Went back a month later, after driving to Miami (they weren't answering the phone due to overload), and no more ID work, so mine was now invalid. Now I had to go to Port Manatee. Fortunately, that was close by home. If you ever want to see Government employees in full swing, stop by your local REC. Bring your crossed t's and dotted i's.

What's the renewal frequency of the Captain's license?
