Was watching the new version of deadliest catch (Dungon Cove) last night and all the boats need to cross the bar (spot where the river meets the ocean out a small narrow jetty... It was 14 foot waves breaking over the boats...

Is this really what's going on the west coast in the north? Seems like I would never want to go boating around there... **** was crazy...

Anyone else see the show?

I watched it via the DVR today... it was okay, same old, same old.

I'll watch another episode or two before deciding whether or not I'll give up on it.

Cheers

Shane, I've been over the bar twice,, both times a non-event with a chop that was under 2'. It all depends on the wind and the tides.

If you are talking about the Columbia Bar, it can get very nasty. Spent 5 years in the PNW (79-84) and went salmon fishing crossing the Columbia Bar 5-6 times. Remember one trip when we were coming in when not only did I wear a life jacket, I grabbed a second one. It was the roughest 12-15 minutes I have ever spent in a boat. Even on a seemingly calm day, it is almost spooky!

The bar on the show last night was not the Columbia River Bar, but it was the bar to the entrance at Newport, Oregon. A few hours South of the Columbia River. I have first hand knowledge of the harbor entrance in some moderate seas. On my trip from San Francisco to Seattle a few years back we had 3 days in Newport, Or. due to weather. We were religious about monitoring the weather and sea conditions for the entire trip. Unfortunately the seas/winds did not follow the predictions and we saw some rough conditions for 1.5 hours after leaving Coos Bay (fuel stop at 2 am) so we headed in at Newport. We entered the bar 20 mins before the harbor entrance was closed (for 3 days) by the Coast Guard. We saw 12-15' seas and 20 knots of wind. This was some serious sh!t for sure. All three of us on the boat had our life jackets on. All safety gear (survival suits, additional life jackets, ditch bag, life raft, epirb, etc, etc. were at the ready as well).

Here is my boat at the guest dock in Newport:

One thing to note, we had dinner with one of the higher ups in the Coast Guard out of Depoe Bay (just North of Newport). He laughed at the conditions we entered the harbor in. He said he did not bother to get on the boat for training runs until they saw 20' plus at the tips (rescues are of course another matter). Said the little stuff in the teens was for the newbies. I would bet the fact that we saw a motor lifeboat on the show last night was a bit staged for dramatic purposes.

The North coast is nothing, absolutely nothing to take lightly. If you plan correctly things can go very well. But there are always variables beyond your control like we dealt with during the trip. It was the only time out of 105 ish running hours that were uncomfortable.

I did not see the entire show last night, just the final 20 mins. or so. I will watch it just because I am a marine addict and love anything boat related.

i watched it but missed that few minutes where they actually went in. but they kept showing previews to hype it up and it looked pretty intimidating

It's a fun show... I'm pretty much a sucker for anything boat related... It's funny, I hate fishing yet I'm glued to the tv for all these fishing shows..

Isn't that bar where the Coast Guard trains? I've heard from captains that run boats from Seattle down the coast that the area around the Columbia River is some of the most treacherous. I have the show recorded. Hope to watch it later tonight.
