Considering a northbound trek up the TenTomBlack Warrior beginning in Mobile. Anybody done that? Would love to hear about it. Thinking about heading north for a week or so, leaving the boat at a marina for a few weeks, then taking it another week or so north. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks

John, I just went south thru there. Peoria, IL to Ft Myers. Ask away

I am told the first stretch northbound from Mobile isn't too pleasant and has few if any places to stop over. What did you think of that portion? How much time did you spend on the lower segments? Your general impressions would be appreciated.
thanks

Actually, even though this is my southbound thread below, probably more info in it if you want to take the time to wade through it. frankly there's just not much on the lower portion of the trip. iirc, about 115 miles from MB to Bobbys Fish Camp and 225 or so to Demopolis Yacht Basin. I covered the lower sections in one day because I had the range and speed, and there just isn't much to see. I've done the trip 2 other times. There are a few historic sights on the tenn-tom, tombigbee & lower black warrior but finding away to see them requires a plan. if you like to gunkhole and sightsee by dinghy, it could be a great time. otherwise, unless I was heading to Pickwick for a week or two, I'd probably spend my time running up and down the emerald coast.

I do think everyone should experience Bobby's Fish Camp though. I think about 95% of loopers and snowbirds stop at Bobby's, so, it kind of has an almost cult following.

Marking this thread to follow.. I'd like to go up from Pickwick next year to watch OU vs Tenn game.

if that's your plan, you'll do the Tennessee vs. tenn-tom waterway, Tombigbee River and Black Warrior . 400+ miles upriver to Knoxville from Pickwick. The gorge near Chattanooga is pretty special. 20+ miles scenic trip thru the Cumberland mountains.

Thanks Tim. Based on your comments and what a couple of other folk have told me I think I will revise my plan. Next trip will probably be the ICW over to St Joe's bay and then on to Appalach. Been in St Joe's on a sail boat and meant to get back in something with less draft.

A suggestion on the Apalachicola trip: Come outside at Panama City and run the coast down past Crooked Island, Mexico Beach to Port St. Joe. Spend at least one night at the St. Joe marina and Port St. Joe (the entire town is within walking distance of the marina and the marina restaurant is pretty good), Then, Take the Gulf County canal up to the ICW, and follow the creek/rivers to Apalachicola. The Panama City to St. Joe ICW is very boring and tedious where the trip outside is some of the most scenic natural beaches in the area and the route is 1/3 protected by the St. Joe point. The ICW from the end of t he St. Joe Canal to Apalach is not a dredged ditch, but is comprised of rivers and creeks and is by far the prettiest part of the ICW. Apalachicola is a really neat town. Slips are available at Scipio Creek Marina and perhaps at the Water Street hotel, both are about 1/2 mile from the heard of town.......we usually take our folding bikes along to explore Apalachicola.

I am doing the reverse right now, I'm actually at Bobbys and was in Demopolis earlier.

I'll be looking for some advise on cruising from Mobile to Fort Myers if anyone is willing to share?

I stayed at Eastern Shore Marina. Since you're going East anyway...they have a free courtesy car and a kick butt Mexican Restaurant a mile up the road. Next day, head south and join the ICW. Lots of places to stop-just review your Quimbys. I pushed all the way to Carabelle. There was a bear foraging across the street that night.
The next day, I made the crossing to Clearwater. Weather was supposed to behave...it did for the first hour, then 3-5'a with occasional 8's. That only lasted 4 hours
The next day it was 1-2's, so we ran the outside all the way to Sanibel. I can offer details if interested.
