Temp guage not working

I have had my boat out a couple of times this year and the temp guage doesn't seem to be working. I know the water temp is cold but I should be seeing some movement on the temp guage and I get none. My question is what is involved in finding a solution for this problem ? Thanks for any help you may provide.

What have you done to try and troubleshoot it? Checked the wiring? Ohm readings off the sender? Power to the gauge?

Vegas,

a 4.3 merc has a temp sender in the thermo housing. As the temp rises the sensor places addition ground to the instrument. Disconnect the wire from the sender and have someone watch the gauge while you touch the lead to the engine block (solid ground). The gauge should pin to high. Note the insulator when you reconnect the wire. Only the terminal on the sender should contact the wire and without the insulation, the wire could contact the sender unit thus giving an incorrect reading.

Thanks I will try that this weekend

if your thermostat is stuck open or missing, you will not see much temperature on the gauge. typically the stick closed, but stranger things happen.
