I am looking for a step-by-step guide for sanding, cleaning and brightening my teak cockpit. Specifically what grit sand paper and/or any other guidelines and instructions to properly restore and maintain my teak cockpit. The rubber grout seam (not sure what it's called) and the teak itself also has grainy/raised groove lines. I'd like to get it back to a smooth finish, then bring back a little of the reddish teak color instead of grey. I like the "wet" look but do not want to oil it.

I have refinished several pieces with Cetrol natural and gloss top coat that looks great. Sand with 100 than with 220, apply finish as per directions. Use thin applications of gloss or drying will be difficult. Also I will be trying Star Brite teak refinishing kit on advice of other members, sounds like a good solution also.

If you use Sikkens Cetol you'll need to use a non-skid (like Interlux Intergrip) sprinkled onto it while wet or you'll bust your ass on it. Teak has natural non-skid properties which makes it great for decks, but the maintenance can be a nightmare. They sure are beautiful, though!

Decks are unique in that you need to preserve the non-skid quality, unlike most other brightwork. I'd suggest posting on a larger, more "general" boating forum- like THT- where you'll find more owners of teak cockpits.

First off avoid sanding teak unless you really have too. There is only so much wood and repeated sanding takes a fatal toll.

That said, use teak cleaner first to achive an even color, then sand just to remove the raised grain 80/100 grit sanding with the grain. Finish with 200/240. Use a vac frequently to keep dust under control.

apply oil, or finish as per choice and mfg. instructions.

Teak has natural oils that will be exposed from sanding away to dried out sirface wood. Applying non breathing finishes to teak should be apporached with caution and careful consideration to intended use i.e. rails & hatch boards versus decks.
