Talk about a freak accident

Why is it so difficult to maintain your things? No excuse for that. Very sad for kids to loose a parent. WTF?

So sad!!! While we do not know exactly why this trailer tire "fell off" that is usually preventable with proper maintenance that a trailer had not been "inspected" or "registered" likely did not have.

"State police said Nevada West III, 62, of Liverpool, was taking his boat home from storage on the eastbound lane of I-690 when a tire slipped off the boat trailer he was using and bounced across the highway before landing on Miles' car.

West's 1998 Yacht Club boat trailer had not been inspected and had not been registered, police said."

Many times on this site it has been stated or implied that if you only use the trailer a few time a season close to home, those folks might get by with otherwise unsafe practices. Some scoff at the recommendations of those of us promoting safety as too picky, but this goes to show why that is wrong advise. Too bad this situation was too bad for even my first-aid kit...

A friend of mine was towing an old MG-A back from Georgia using a car dolly under the rear wheels - i.e. towing the car backwards, with the front wheels on the ground. What they didn't consider is that the car had knock-off hubs, and running the front wheels backwards for that long spun one of the hubs off. The wheel went into the ditch in the median, launched into the air and landed on the hood of the Mercedes of a lawyer who was driving the other direction. No one was injured, but it led to YEARS of fun trying to close that case.

That was as lucky as the OP story was unlucky

Then that lawyer is a slimy scumbag. If no one is hurt then no lawsuit should be allowed. First kill all the lawyers ~ Shakespeare

Years ago I sold a boat and tandem trailer to a newbie-boater co-worker. I thought I was careful, making sure all parts of the trailer were in good condition. I regularly checked the brakes, bearings, lights, winch etc. I had kept the bearings greased and let them cool before submerging them. After his first long-distance haul and attempted launch, he nearly jack-knifed the trailer on the ramp. In the process, one of the bearings failed and a wheel fell off of the trailer. He was convinced it was his fault, but it still gives me chills to think about how easily that wheel could've become a projectile while I was pulling it down a freeway.

Years ago I was traveling on 95 south of Providence R.I. and a truck tire came bounding up the northbound side. Jump the median went by me and eventually ended up in the breakdown lane. Luckily it didn't hit anyone.
