Hi all:

Some newbie questions!?! We are taking delivery of the new boat in Mid-May, the dealer is supplying us a "captain for the day" to show us all the goodies, etc. What should we expect on that day? Should we go over the boat and look for things that need attention, etc.
Thanks!

Scappare - First of all, welcome to the board

Could you give us more details on what boat you will take delivery on? new or preowned - engine / drive - model etc...

Then get ready for the flood of replies

Congradulations on the new boat. Some 2006 240DA's had an issue with the cabin table fitting into the opening when use to fill in the v-berth, make sure you check that fit.

Welcome & Congratulations on the new boat
Our captain for the day spent about 2 hours at the dock going over all of the operating systems. Everything from the head to the GPS. He left it pretty open ended too, so that if there was more we wanted/needed to know, he covered it. We spent another couple of hours on the water. We were true newbies, so once we got out on open water we opened up the throttle several times while trimming the drive and using trim tabs. We practiced dropping anchor a couple of times Then we went to a neighboring marina that had better wind protection and wider fairways to work on docking and control. He let us know that he was there until we were 100% comfortable with all aspects of the boat.
My $.02 - Don't be afraid to ask questions. This will be a great hands-on learning experience. Make sure you are comfortable with everythng before you let him walk away... and have a blast

Congratulations :smt038 You're going to love it!. As for things to think about, how about a survey? I've heard that's a good idea even for a new boat. A professional surveyor may find glitches you may overlook. I figure for $500 or so, it's cheap insurance. See what everybody else thinks of this. Again, congrats!

Check the boat over thoroughly for any cosmetic items that you see. You are likely to find a few of them and the dealer will be glad to fix them for you. Plus you will find other things later on..........we all do........so just keep a list for the dealer.

Check out your canvas snaps thoroughly. Some times a few of them come loose since they initially fit tight and it takes a bit of tugging to get them off and on. If you purchased camper canvas, I would also put that up and check it out now.

I asked for a complete explanation of all "mechanicals" when my 260DA was delivered last year. We spent about an hour under the engine hatch as he went thru all the various systems down there. All of that stuff was very important for me and I think everyone should go thru that whether you plan to do your own maintenance or not.

Make sure he thoroughly explains the electrical side of things too such as the battery switch, the DC switch panel and the A/C switch panel in the boat because that stuff can be a bit confusing for a first time Cruiser owner.

Yes.............and one other thing.......TAKE LOTS AND LOTS OF NOTES since you will not remember everything. My wife was the official scribe and she did a very good job and her notes were referred to several times as we were becomming familiar with the boat.

The Captain will show you enough about piloting the boat to get you comfortable but I have to tell you that if you back into a slip very often, that will just take practice. It took me quite awhile to get proficient at this so get as many tips as you can from the Captain.

Best of luck with the new boat.

Scappare - Welcome Aboard  . Post some pics of your boat in the virtual marina :smt024 . When you get the boat.

Looks like Dave and some of the others have hit the major item. Question - Are you getting a trailer with the 240DA or is it an in water delivery. If it is a trailer when you pull it back out do a complete wipe down and you may find some places on the gel coat that need to be taken care of. Just a thought.

Wicked good info. - Thank you guys so much. We are true newbies so I am a little anxious about manuevering around the slip, but that is part of the fun. During out wait we added a bow/anchor roller based on more good info. on these pages and they are adding her name. Thanks again.
