Tachometer cylinder setting for diesel engine

We met with my Volvo Penta tech at the weekend to check engine parameters by the "VODIA" VP hand held pc Volvo diagnostics tool which read the engine rpm lower than the Searay tachometer, where mech says that vodia reading is the true rpms since it's getting info directly from engine brain.

I read a few threads about 4-V6-V8 cylinder settings of the Searay tachometers. Does this apply to the diesel engine tachometers that I have 4000rpm gauge and an inline 6 cylinder engine ?

I recorded short videos of backside of tacho and is there a setting port on it ? If so how can I set it to 6 ?

Not always. A lot of diesel engine makers use tooth counters on the flywheel. If you have one, you will find a sender that looks like any other sender mounted inline with the flywheel on the engine bell housing. Where you have either a flywheel sender or a mechanical cable drive for the tach, your tachs probably do not have a selector switch on the back side.

You are spot on of the engine speed (rpm) sensor of my engine which is located just over the bell housing as seen on below pic.


So I have to investigate the sensor and wiring.
