Switch to Inverter from Generator

That makes perfect sense. Any issues with the mount location? What part of MD? That may be one to see and take pictures of to duplicate. I am not a fan of another CO source on the boat.

I am close to Columbia, and keep the boat on a trailer at my home. The mount is 1/4" flat steel it appears, (haven't measured it) and it mounts to the engine using the thermostat bolts that hold the thermostat housing. It is not super steady, if you grasp the alt. you can wobble it a bit, but that dosen't seem to be a problem when the engine is running. It has it's own battery selector switch as well so you can take the batteries off line if needed. I currently have it disassembled as I pour antifreeze down through the thermostat to the block and hoses to protect them. I'm replacing thermostat this spring, so dodn't reassemble the braket system. Maybe in the spring when I get it back together i can post some pics. Cliff

I would love to see the whole system when you get it back together, including how the inverter is run. Thanks!

Hi. When I purchased my boat, the generator was broken and too costly to repair. I removed it and decided to install an inverter. I used a Xantrex xpower 5000 hardwire unit. Installed it in the cabin under the sink area in the cabinet. There was already a transfer switch from the generator install. I have 4 Interstate group 29 batteries, 3 for inverter/house use, one for starting. I ran 4/0 cable to inverter, with high amp fuse and disconnect switch. I installed a high amp alternator direct wired to inverter bank, with a Balmar duo-charge to keep starting battery charged. When docked, Im plugged in and use a Pro-mariner pro-sport charger to keep batteries maintained.
I have a microwave, 9000 btu a/c unit, and outlets. I have run the a/c underway and short periods on the hook, but never tried to run a/c all night on inverter. I have run microwave, coffee maker intermittently overnight, along with other house loads, with no problems. I did change all bulbs to LEDs. No problems with dead batteries. The inverter does have low voltage warning and shutdown, just in case.
I think if I anchored out for longer periods of time , I would like a genny, but I would keep the inverter too.

Overall, I am very pleased with the results.

Chris
